09/09/2020

Recently our new community park on Randolph Street has been subject to a number of acts of vandalism. In only the past month, a port-a-john has been set on fire with fireworks, and the port-a-johns have been improperly used and littered in. Playground equipment, benches, picnic tables, and lighting fixtures have also all been damaged. It is sad and disappointing that this park that the community has waited so long for has seen this much damage, after only being open for one year. The park is for everyone and we would like to keep it nice, and continue make expansions on it for generations to enjoy. This will be impossible to do if people cannot be respectful of this public area and take responsibility for their or their children’s actions. This park is intended to be used with adult supervision. Please call 911 immediately if you witness any acts of vandalism occurring, and help us take care of this park. This is your park. It was built for you. Please treat it as such. Thank you.

Winfield Police Department

We always encourage anyone who sees something suspicious to call 911, emergency or non-emergency, right away for immediate police response. Luckily this turned out to be a misunderstanding but better to clarify that sooner rather than later especially when it comes to the safety of our children.

On Wednesday, September 2, 2020 the Winfield Police Department was contacted by a resident who believed that a man was fondling himself while sitting in his truck at the Randolph Community Park. Even though it was not reported immediately, officers checked the park for the subject, but did not locate him. The resident did supply officers with the plate number of the truck and later in the evening officers located the subject in Winfield. After questioning the subject, it was determined that he was in the park playing the virtual game Pokeman with his two phones. Officers verified this information and released him. We do not believe that his actions were inappropriate or posed a danger to anyone at the park. We greatly appreciate the public's watchfulness and ask you to call 911 whenever you see something suspicious or possibly criminal in nature. The safety and welfare of our community, especially our children, is first and foremost in the minds of the Winfield Police Department; and we could not achieve this without the assistance and cooperation of our residents.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding this matter, or any other matter in Winfield, you may contact the office of the Town Marshal at 779-9326.

You might have seen these signs around town put up by our friends at the Winfield Community Foundation. This is friendly reminder to help keep our kids safe and don't pass school buses when you see the lights flashing and the stop sign out!

It's been awhile since we've seen school buses on our roads. Please be alert and give plenty of space so our kiddos can safely arrive to and from school. We have placed various signs around the Township as a helpful reminder. Thank you!

Reminder, Census workers are in the area now. See below.

Please note: We have Census Workers in the neighborhoods going door-to-door gathering information for the 2020 Census. A couple of points to be aware of:

- They are wearing lanyards with Photo ID issued by the US Department of Commerce. You may ask to see it before opening your door.
- Please be cooperative and kind. They have a short list of questions to ask.
- These people are paid volunteers and are likely your neighbor or live within the same town / city.
- Completing a Census is required by law and the information is confidential. The data from the Census will help pay for roads, schools, public services, and determines the redistricting for representation in Congress.

If you feel that someone is falsely representing themselves as a Census taker, call 911 with a physical description and where you last saw them. An officer will be dispatched to confirm their identity.

By now, most of the country has responded to the census. The Census Bureau is now visiting every household that has not already responded to make sure they are counted. If you haven’t responded yet, it’s not too late. You can still respond online, by phone, or by mail. If a census taker comes to your home, please cooperate. Your community needs your response.
•If you haven’t responded, a census taker will visit your household soon. Please answer their questions.
•Answering the census taker’s questions is easy, safe and important.
•Census takers are from your community. They know that a complete and accurate count will benefit
your area.
•If you haven’t responded yet, now is the time.
•If you have responded to the census, you may still be visited by a census taker conducting quality
checks.
•The Census Bureau will soft launch the Nonresponse Followup operation on July 30 in NW Indiana
