Winfield Fire Department would like express our sincere gratitude to those that have reached out to us this week as we mourned the passing of our beloved Pogo. The outpouring of support has been overwhelming. This community is everything small town America should be. We are proud to serve the people of Winfield who continue to support us and stand beside one another in our time of need. A special thank you to our neighboring departments for their assistance and support in the days leading up to and during Pogo’s celebration of life and final call. Continue to keep Pogo’s family and our family here at Winfield Fire in your prayers in the days and months ahead as we navigate this new normal. God bless you all!

***Reminder of Pogo’s Celebration of Life:

-All services will be on Sunday, July 26, 2026.

-Public Viewing will be held from 1pm to 3pm at Chapmans Funeral home in Winfield.

-All fire apparatus will park next door at Winfield Baptist Church. If you wish to bring a truck, please contact Ryan Powers at (304)205-3944. Be ready to provide: Department Name, Contact Person, Phone #, and number of Apparatus attending.

- Final Call will take place at Chapmans Funeral Home before the procession departs for a private grave side service at Haven of Rest in Hometown, WV.

-All apparatus not participating in the procession are encouraged to line Rt-817 in Winfield for a final salute as the procession passes. Trucks will be directed how to proceed from the church parking lot at the end of the public viewing.

-A dinner for friends and family will be hosted at Winfield Methodist Church immediately following the grave-side service.

He will certainly be missed by all who knew him. A servant to his community that did not know a stranger. He truly had a heart of gold 💛!

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our longest serving member, Roger “Pogo” Sheets, a cornerstone of the Winfield Volunteer Fire Department and a beloved figure throughout our community.

Pogo dedicated 65 years of service to WVFD, holding every position from Junior Firefighter all the way to Chief. His commitment, leadership, and steady presence shaped generations of firefighters and strengthened the department in ways that will be felt for decades to come.

Whether he was mentoring new members, sharing stories around the station, or lending a hand anywhere it was needed, Pogo was always there. He was more than a firefighter, he was family, a friend, and a constant source of pride for Winfield.

We are grateful for his lifetime of service and the legacy he leaves behind. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all who had the honor of serving beside him. Please also keep WVFD in your prayers as we navigate this new norm with a void that may never be filled. Rest easy Pogo, we've got it from here...
