This isn't just for children's toys, either! For anything loose in your vehicle, think about if you'd be hurt if it hit you in the face moving 20, 30, 40 or even higher miles per hour. If the answer is 'yes, that would hurt or injure me', store it away so it isn't a potential projectile. And if it would hurt you as an adult, think about what it would do to an infant or child. Just say no to projectiles!

This is shared from a location in California. Lots of times people ask us to host seat checks and such. And we love doing that. But it takes a reasonable amount of time to check each seat. It isn't as simple as checking for tightness and ensuring the straps are tight enough on the child. We have to uninstall the seat and look at EVERYTHING. This image shows one of the many reasons WHY we have to do that. In my time as a child passenger safety technician, I've uninstalled seats and found ribbons, zip ties, shoe laces, and duct tape holding straps together in the back. I've found ratchet straps and even bolts holding the seats in place! I've seen a board bolted to the bottom of a car seat to help it 'fit better'. And none of these things were done b/c a parent didn't care. They were done b/c the caregiver was trying to do the very best they could with the materials and knowledge they had available to them. There's no shame to that game when they are doing the best they can. We are here to educate caregivers so when things happen that they feel require these sorts of interventions, they know to get with us or with the car seat manufacturer (or both!) to find out how to best solve whatever problem there is with their seat. We all want those kiddos as safe as possible!

Safety Tip of the Day:
Many families will try to extend the life of a car seat by modifying it in some way. These modifications can make the seat unsafe and can interfere with how it is meant to function. Nothing should be added or removed from the seat unless directed by the seat manufacturer. When in doubt, reach out to a child passenger safety technician in your area.

Stop by and see us at Ark City's National Night Out kickoff event! We look forward to seeing you all!

The Arkansas City Police Department is preparing for the 41st annual National Night Out, a nationwide program sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch to help prevent crime, drug use, and violence.

This year’s activities will begin with the National Night Out Kickoff Party from 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday, October 6, 2025, at Wilson Park. The event will feature food, activities, and opportunities to meet local law enforcement officers in a family-friendly setting.

Residents are also encouraged to host neighborhood block parties the following evening, Tuesday, October 7, 2025. These gatherings are a chance for neighbors to connect, strengthen community bonds, and show a united front against crime.

To register a block party, residents can email [email protected] or call 620-441-6601. The registration deadline is September 26.

“National Night Out is a powerful reminder that our community’s strength lies in the partnership between citizens and law enforcement,” Police Chief Jim Holloway said. “By coming together, we send a strong message that crime, drugs, and violence have no place in Arkansas City.”

At the September 16, 2025, City Commission meeting, Mayor Chad Beeson signed a proclamation officially declaring October 7, 2025, as National Night Out in Arkansas City.

I've seen some questions about bike helmets on other community pages and some great folks have tagged both Safe Kids Cowley County and me personally. We are not having another full scale bike helmet distribution event in the county until the spring, but I am more than happy to give a helmet to anyone who needs one (I think I still have a few adult sizes as well). Feel free to give me a call at 620-262-2112 so we can arrange a time for you to come up so I can make sure all the noggins in the county are safe!
