Joseph Snow first settled in the area of Winn in 1820, the year Maine also became a state, establishing Snowville along what is now the Old Military Road off US Route 2. om the town center in East Winn, a sawmill, grist mill, and shingle mill thrived. And in 1863, Shaw Tilson & Co., later Shaw Brothers, built the world's second-largest tannery near the town's steamboat landing. The tannery business brought a large hotel, the Katahdin House, along with a bustling retail center with fashionable millinery, a dry goods store, a druggist, and a paint store. Thomas Marden came from Pennsylvania to establish St. Thomas Church, where an Episcopal congregation continues to worship today in the original Gothic-style wooden church. Today, the quiet town, which covers 43.8 square miles, is home to about 170 households and two schools-Lee Academy and the Lee-Winn Elementary School. It offers residents and visitors access to miles of recreational trails for riding and snow sledding, along with boating and fishing on Dwinal Pond.
