Congratulations to Winnabow Volunteer Firefighter Emilee Flaverney on receiving her black Interior firefighter helmet shield from Winnabow Chief Mercer and Assistant Chief A. Lentz on Tuesday, May 26, 2026. This follows FF Flaverney’s graduation from Southeastern Community College Fire Academy on May 1st and receiving her Firefighter certification from the State of North Carolina.

Receiving a black Interior firefighter shield, and removing the probationary firefighter shield, are deeply symbolic moments in a firefighter’s career, representing significant milestones in their journey.

The helmet and shield are two of the most iconic pieces of a firefighter’s personal protective gear. It symbolizes that the firefighter is now fully prepared to enter dangerous situations, having completed their initial training and proving their readiness to protect lives and property. The helmet also carries the weight of tradition, linking the new firefighter to the long history of the fire service. It’s a moment of pride and a visual marker that they are now part of this respected brotherhood and sisterhood.

Please join us in congratulating Winnabow Volunteer Firefighter E. Flaverney on her significant accomplishment!

Memorial Day serves as a solemn reminder of the courage and sacrifice of those who gave their lives in service to the Nation, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. It is a day to reflect on the cost of freedom and the enduring commitment to protect it. First responders and the military share a close bond as many who also serve our Nation in the military reserves have made the ultimate sacrifice while on active duty.

As we come together with family and friends this Memorial Day, let us take a moment to honor and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect the freedoms and rights we enjoy today.

Fire chiefs and fire service members from across North Carolina met in Raleigh on Wednesday, May 20th, for N.C. Fire Service Legislative Day. Brunswick County was well represented by several chiefs who made the trip to speak with our state leaders on issues affecting the fire service and the communities we serve.

Topics discussed included firefighter cancer coverage, LODD benefits, firefighter pensions, retirement changes, voting location support for stations, and local fire fee funding in Brunswick County.

We appreciate Representatives Charlie Miller and Frank Iler taking the time to meet with us and discuss the needs of Brunswick County fire departments. Unfortunately, Senator Bill Rabon’s schedule did not allow us time to meet today.

The fire service was also recognized in the House Chambers, and it was a good opportunity to work alongside departments from across the state.

On Training night, Tuesday, May 19, 2026, Assistant Chief Lentz and Lieutenants Butchello and Orahood took Firefighters to Town Creek for refresher training on deploying Winnabow Boats 1 and 2.

Assistant Chief Lentz said, “while water rescues can happen year-round, as part of our hurricane season preparedness we like to exercise our skills of hauling, deploying and operating our boats without the urgency of a rescue. It keeps our team fresh.”

No training night would be complete without running a brush fire call on the way back to the station.

Congratulations to Winnabow Volunteer Firefighter Christian Jones on receiving his black Interior firefighter helmet shield from Winnabow Assistant Chief A. Lentz (5/19/26).

The helmet and shield are two of the most iconic pieces of a firefighter’s personal protective gear. It’s a moment of pride and a visual marker that they are now part of this respected brotherhood and sisterhood.

“Our Department is so proud of our Junior members who, while in high school and working a job, complete the requirements to receive their black shield,” said Assistant Chief Lentz.

Please join us in congratulating Winnabow Volunteer Firefighter C. Jones on his significant accomplishment!

On Saturday, May 16, 2026, Winnabow Firefighters were invited by our Leland Fire Department partners to participate in a live training burn in the Town of Belville.

Training burns such as this occur when vacant structures are offered to the fire department. They are extremely valuable training opportunities for firefighters to experience realistic fire conditions when they enter the structure and to train with our neighboring departments.

A huge thank you to our Leland Fire Department partners for including us.

On Saturday, May 16, 2026, at approximately 5:00 p.m., Winnabow Engine 4 with Lieutenant Butchello and Firefighters Reshetar, Shepherd, Woodring and B. Jones were dispatched to an animal rescue with a storybook ending. Upon arrival, concerned residents led the crew to a storm drain where a baby kitten was located between two grates under the roadway. Crews entered on both sides in case she tried to go further into the drain line. The crew at drain one began to flow a light stream of water from Engine 4 while firefighter Shepherd summoned his inner cat-calling skills. This combination did the trick as she ran into Firefighter Shepherd’s hands for the save.

After a local resident loaned us a carrier, Winnabow Engine 4 returned to the station where one of our members took her home for immediate shelter and food. Firefighter Shepherd requested visiting rights.
