June is National Pet Preparedness Month!

Our pets are an important part of our families. Don’t forget to include them when making preparedness plans for your household.

Here are a few helpful tips to ensure you and your pets are prepared for disaster and emergencies:
• Ensure your pet wears a collar with ID tag that contains current contact information. It’s a good idea to have your pet microchipped as well. Ensure the microchip registration information is also current.
• Create a pet disaster preparedness plan.
• Have a pet disaster preparedness kit ready. Be sure to include any medication your pet takes on a regular basis.
• Have a list of safe places you can go in the event of an emergency or disaster.

The Winnetka Police Department may be utilizing a drone during this weekend’s Music Festival on Friday and Saturday. Signs will also be posted at major entry points informing attendees that a drone may be in use for real-time monitoring to help ensure participant safety.

Under State law 725 ILCS 167/5, police are required to provide at least 24 hours’ advance public notice of planned drone use. Any drones operated by the Police Department will adhere strictly to FAA safety regulations during their operation.

During National Safety Month, we want to remind motorists to slow down and move over for emergency vehicles.

All 50 states have “Move Over” laws to protect first responders stopped on roadways. The Illinois law, Scott’s Law, was named in honor of Scott Gillen of the Chicago Fire Department, who was struck and killed by a drunk driver while assisting at a crash site on a Chicago Expressway.

When approaching a stationary emergency vehicle that is displaying flashing warning lights, Illinois motorists must:
• Slow down
• Drive with caution
• Move over to another lane
• Reduce speed if changing lanes is unsafe.

When entering a roadway construction area, Illinois law requires motorists to:
• Slow down
• Discontinue wireless use
• Yield or change lanes away from authorized vehicles or workers in the area

Scott’s Law applies to all vehicles displaying flashing warning lights, including tow trucks, IDOT vehicles, and other authorized emergency vehicles. Motorists must move over when encountering any stopped/disabled vehicles when it is safe to do so.

Did you know that firefighters have a 9% higher risk of being diagnosed with cancer and a 14% higher risk of dying from cancer than the general U.S. population, according to NIOSH study results?

A cancer diagnosis is life altering. Having a good team at your back can make a huge impact and is a reminder that you are never alone in the fight. Organizations like Shield 23 Foundation Inc work tirelessly to help ease the burden for affected firefighters and their families, allowing them to focus on healing.

Police posing in front of the fire truck?? (There’s a friendly rivalry between departments.) Stranger things have happened! Just one of the many sights to see at Touch-A-Truck on Saturday morning—all morning—starting at 7:30 in the Village Hall lot. Do you want to know what’s in all those compartments in that fire truck? We will tell you!

Additional fun includes the Farmers’ Market Saturday morning across the street from Touch-A-Truck and Art in the Village Saturday and Sunday in Hubbard Woods Park (10 AM - 5 PM). The Schmidt-Burnham Log House is open Sunday from 2 - 4 PM.

On the administrative side, the Village has a Zoning Board of Appeals meeting tonight, a Special Council Meeting Tuesday, a Board of Fire and Police Commissioners meeting and Zoning Administrator meeting AND an Environmental, Forestry, and Sustainability Commission meeting on Wednesday (busy day!). There is also a post office site concepts open house Tuesday from 4:30 - 6:30 at Village Hall and another one next Monday from 6 - 8. Stop by for a few minutes and share your thoughts if you can!
