"I don't want to give up knitting just because I'm losing my vision. I might have to change my knitting, or I might have to change how I knit or something like that."

Hadley member Anne is one of many people who knit with vision loss.

We updated our knitting blog post below with practical tips for knitting with low vision or blindness, including ideas for using touch, contrast, lighting, labeling, and organization to make knitting easier and more enjoyable.

You'll also find links to crafting communities where you can learn from, connect with, and encourage others along the way.

Steven Scott from the Double Tap podcast joined us on Hadley Presents to talk about smart technology in the home for people with vision loss. He mentioned that some people think technical solutions won’t be right for older adults, but he finds that anyone can get excited about technology once they learn what it can do.

“I never subscribed to the theory that age has anything to do with capability,” Scott said. “I’ve met a lot of 85-year-olds who could probably outdo me with technology. It’s not about age.”

Smartphone screens are small and can be hard to read with vision loss. But you can make it easier to read things like emails and articles by changing how the text is displayed on screen, or by having it read aloud. On an Android device, the Reading Mode app—which is free and has no ads—lets you do just that.

Want to learn how? Check out Hadley’s Reading Mode workshop below. And feel free to call us at 800-323-4238 if you have any questions.

Today we'll look at Google's Reading Mode app. This is a free app that makes longer text like articles and emails easier to read. For looking at the text, we can adjust the displays, font, color spacing and more.

Is it hard to find your place on your keyboard with vision loss?

Marking just a few spots can make a big difference.

Watch how it works in this Tech Tip Tuesday from Hadley and the Foundation Fighting Blindness .

Video Description: Begins with the text “Tech Tip Tuesday” at the top and a close-up view of a computer keyboard, with labels on the F and J keys. Below is the text “Keyboard Shortcuts: Placeholders” and the Hadley and Foundation Fighting Blindness logos at the bottom. A hand using a computer keyboard appears, and the step-by-step instructions are narrated. Ends with the logos again, followed by “Learn more at: HadleyHelps.org" and the finger pointing icon below.
