Sometimes, a simple ramp can mean so much more than a way to get from the front door to the driveway. It can mean independence, dignity, safety and the ability to stay connected to home and family. That’s the heart behind the Bridge Builders for Christ Ramp Ministry in Fairfield County.

The ministry began with the Men’s Ministry at Winnsboro’s First Church of the Nazarene, when members saw a need among those in their church family who were living with disabilities. As that need grew throughout the county, David Ferguson and Tommy Wright, with the support of their church, applied for and received a grant from Fairfield Electric Cooperative’s Operation Round Up Program in 2018.

From there, the Bridge Builders for Christ Ramp Ministry was born. Since its beginning, this incredible group of volunteers has helped build approximately 184 ramps for Fairfield County residents in need.

The ministry is made up of men from different congregations, along with members of the Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office, all coming together with a shared purpose: to serve their neighbors.
These men give something priceless — their time, talents, and willingness to serve. Materials are generally paid for by the client when possible, while donations help make projects possible for those who cannot afford the cost. Fairfield Electric Cooperative has been a faithful supporter since the ministry’s inception, along with individuals, churches and other community organizations.
And the work continues. Volunteers are always needed and welcomed.

The ramps are available to eligible Fairfield County residents whose homes can safely accommodate proper construction and who can provide a doctor’s prescription.

At the August 10, 2026 Fairfield County Council meeting, Chairman Clarence Gilbert, District 7, and the Fairfield County Council proudly recognized the Bridge Builders for Christ Ramp Ministry and expressed sincere appreciation for their obedience to their calling and their continued service to citizens in need.

You aren't just building ramps. You're building bridges to independence, dignity, hope and a stronger community. Fairfield County is better because of your service!

At the August 10th, 2026 Fairfield County Council meeting, Firefighters Michael Hollis and Jimmy Walters were recognized for their induction into the State Firefighters Association Hall of Fame Class of 2026. Fairfield County Fire Chief Jamie Webb spoke about the impact Hollis and Walters have had on the safety of Fairfield County citizens:

Nomination Description for Michael Hollis

Michael continues to serve his department, county, and State proudly with 55 years of service. It takes a special person to be a dedicated volunteer fire firefighter for this length of time. Michael is also an active member of the Fairfield County Rescue Squad with over 50 years of service in various roles including department Chaplin and scuba dive team member. Michael Hollis is often known as the silent volunteer, always stepping in when help is needed.

Nomination Description for Jimmy Walters

Jimmy has served his Department, County and State proudly. Through his years of service Jimmy earned his department over $750,000.00 in Grants. With those grants, the department was able to replace a light air/service truck, provide new turn out gear for all personnel, provide WT Radios for all members, and personnel SCBA Masks for all members. Jimmy served as a volunteer for over 15 years for the South Carolina Fire Rescue Conference, serving as Sargent of Arms and Logistics staff. Jimmy Walters’ dedication and determination helped make the fire service what it is today.

Fairfield County would like to thank Firefighters Michael Hollis and Jimmy Walters on their continued service to the Fairfield County community.

Today, we celebrate and congratulate Ms. Pelham Lyles on her retirement and honor nearly three decades of extraordinary dedication to Fairfield County.

A proud Winnsboro native, Pelham has spent her career preserving, sharing and bringing our community’s rich history to life. As Museum Director, she inspired countless residents and visitors to discover the stories, people, places and natural beauty that make Fairfield County so special.
Her passion for history, education, service, science and nature has touched generations. And perhaps most importantly, Pelham has lived by the simple but powerful principle of the Golden Rule—treating others with kindness, generosity and genuine care.

As she begins this exciting new chapter, we are thrilled to see her making time for the things she loves: reopening her art studio to paint simply for the joy of it, spending more time with family, hiking and continuing to learn from the wonders of science and nature.

At the August 10, 2026 meeting, Chairman Clarence Gilbert, District 7, and the Fairfield County Council proudly recognized Pelham Lyles for her retirement and unwavering service to our community.

Thank you, Pelham, for preserving the stories that make Fairfield County who we are. Your dedication, kindness, and love for this community have created a legacy that will continue to inspire us for generations to come.

Congratulations on your retirement, Pelham! May this next chapter be filled with creativity, family, adventure and plenty of time to paint.
