If you see a baby deer (a fawn) lying alone during the day, leave it alone unless it is clearly injured or its mother is definitely dead. Wildlife agencies across the U.S. all give basically the same guidance.
Why this happens:
• Mother deer intentionally leave fawns hidden for hours at a time while they feed nearby.
• Young fawns stay very still and quiet as a survival instinct.
• Does usually return only a few times a day, often around dawn or dusk, so you may never see the mother.
What you should do:
• Keep your distance.
• Keep dogs and children away.
• Do not feed, move, or pick up the fawn.
• If possible, leave the area quickly so the mother feels safe returning.
