Measles Spreads Easily: Know the Facts

It can spread through the air when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or breathes—and the virus can remain in the air for a period of time after they leave.

Symptoms may include fever, cough, runny nose, red or watery eyes, and a rash that usually begins on the face and spreads downward. Because measles can spread before someone knows they are sick, recognizing symptoms and taking precautions after a possible exposure are important ways to help protect others.

For reliable information about measles, prevention, and what to do if you may have been exposed, visit trusted public health resources and talk with your healthcare provider.

Winona County Public Health Monitoring Regional Measles Activity

Public Health is closely monitoring the ongoing measles outbreak in southwestern
Wisconsin and is coordinating with the Minnesota Department of Health and local healthcare providers.

Measles is highly contagious and can cause serious illness. People who are not vaccinated or who are unsure of their vaccination status are at greatest risk if exposed.

Now is a good time to check your family's vaccination records. Minnesota Department of Health recommends MMR vaccination as the best way to prevent measles. If you have questions about whether you or your child need an MMR vaccine, contact your healthcare provider.

If you develop a fever and rash and believe you may have been exposed to measles, call your healthcare provider before seeking in-person care.
