Smith County Emergency Services District 2 crews have worked more than one Wildland fire this morning. They are currently working on I-20 around MM 575EB extending several miles. One lane is shutdown starting at MM 574EB. Reports are coming in with fires igniting as far east as Liberty City.

Please watch for first responders working the scenes. We are NOT under a burn ban. However, please consider refraining from outdoor burning or disposing of flammable products in the grass.

🚒 Investing in Fire Prevention Through Education 🚒

The Winona Volunteer Fire Department, in collaboration with Smith County ESD #2 and the Texas A&M Forest Service, was proud to send Captain Paula Hiett and Captain Greg Coats to the TEEX Annual Municipal Fire School in College Station, Texas.

Held July 19–24, this week-long training brings together firefighters and first responders from across Texas and beyond to enhance their knowledge and skills.

Captain Hiett and Captain Coats successfully completed the Fire and Life Safety Educator I course. This training qualifies them to become certified to present fire prevention and life safety education programs to our community, helping residents of all ages learn how to prevent fires and stay safe.

Congratulations to Captains Hiett and Coats on this accomplishment! We appreciate the continued support of Smith County ESD #2 and the Texas A&M Forest Service for helping us bring valuable training back to serve the citizens of Winona and the surrounding community.

Winona Fire was pleased to be able a partner with Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas to provide canopies for shade in the daytime and light in the evenings at their recent Summer Sensations twilight camp held at Camp Tyler. I can tell you, that come evening hours these benches were full of giggling, wiggling, & singing scouts.

Saturday Training: Thank you to Fuller's Towing & Recovery for your hospitality today.
The crew worked on “jaws of life” skills. Techniques reviewed included door removal and trapped patient access, vehicle stabilization for crew and patient safety, use of cutters & spreaders.
Review for experienced responders and skill opportunities for new members is critical for emergency responses.
