THE DFL SENATE DISTRICT CONVENTION ENDORSES SENATE AND HOUSE CANDIDATES FOR 2026

The Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party Senate District 20 Convention took place on Saturday, March 14, at the Plainview-Elgin-Millville PreK-3 School in Plainview, MN. Delegates from the District unanimously endorsed Jason Lohmann for State Senate. Lohman, a local farmer, truck driver, and member of both the Zumbrota-Mazeppa School Board and the Goodhue County Education District Board, promised to bring common sense, practical experience, and a working-class voice to St. Paul.

The convention delegates also endorsed retired National Guard Lieutenant Colonel Heather Arendt as their candidate for House District 20A. A native of Belle Creek Township, Arendt has been a lifelong advocate for rural Minnesota; she helped lead the bipartisan fight against Zip Rail and for a safer Highway 52 corridor. Arendt said she'd bring her leadership experience, moderate political beliefs, and core values of honesty and integrity to the State House.

Steve Holm, lifelong resident of the St. Charles area and retired Mayo Clinic Information Technology programmer lead, was unanimously endorsed for House District 20B. Holm, who lives on the family farm where he grew up, has extensive experience with the Saratoga Township and Winona County Planning and Zoning Committee; he promised to use his talents as a problem solver to look for practical solutions to the many difficulties facing rural Minnesota.

Minnesota's Primary Election is Tuesday, August 11. The General Election will be Tuesday, November 3.

STEVE HOLM PUTS HIS HAT IN THE RING FOR HOUSE DISTRICT 20B

Three weeks ago, Steve Holm was concentrating on an upcoming bowling tournament. Then he got the news that Michael Hutchinson had stepped away from the DFL and was running as an Independent in House District 20B. “I felt we needed a Democratic presence on the ticket,” Steve says. “I thought about it. Then I got a call from Joe Shepherd.” Shepherd, DFL House Caucus Rural Campaigns Director, encouraged Steve to run. Steve started taking the idea more seriously; he talked it over with his wife and with friends. Then DFL Floor Leader Jamie Long called after a House session and added his encouragement. “I started to get a definite interest in running,” Steve said. Soon he was filing papers and putting together a campaign team.
In a race where being local is an advantage, Steve is about as local as you can get. He spent a lot of his childhood on a cattle farm in the St. Charles area, and stayed in the area for his entire career, working in Information Technology for the Mayo Clinic in Rochester. Later, Steve and his wife DeAnne purchased the family farm from his father, and made it their home. He says he is typical of many folks in the area: “People that grow up in SE MN tend to stay—for family, for the familiarity of life here. Everybody talks about how neighborly we are. If you know one person, you know their extended family.”
Steve has plenty of experience in local government. He started out on the Saratoga Township zoning variance committee, then served on the Township Board for a number of years. “Next, I got involved in the Winona County Planning and Zoning Committee. I’m also on the MiEnergy Cooperative Advisory Committee.” These positions all helped Steve develop a solid grasp of the issues facing the district, and the need for future solutions to everything from crop planting options to climate change resilience strategies. But Steve is also mindful of the past; he is president of the cemetery associations for both Saratoga and Sinclair cemeteries, helping to make sure the resting places of community members are cared for.
“My entire life I’ve been a problem solver,” Steve says. “I see something broken, I learn as much as I can about it and propose a solution.” That’s what Steve did at Mayo, where several of his ideas were implemented to facilitate safety and efficiency. Now Steve hopes to use that practical approach in the Minnesota House. He worries about federal cuts to FEMA, Medicare, Medicaid, and a host of other programs that are used to support rural people. He worries about the loss of markets for farmers, about high prices and the decline of rural clinics: “I see how much family farms and small businesses are struggling. We need to work on economic growth and recovery so businesses in small towns stay open, so farmers don’t have to look at loan after loan to stay afloat.”
Steve says he believes resilience and neighborliness are core Minnesota values. He remembers the time a storm blew down a giant oak across his driveway: “People just showed up with chainsaws to help—that’s the kind of thing you can’t find everywhere. It makes me proud to be a Minnesotan.” He wants neighborliness to be channeled to solve the state’s problems. “With everything going on outside the state, I want to make sure Minnesota can take care of its own people,” he said.
Steve knows that House District 20B is a solidly Republican district, but he says that this year people are looking to vote for the person, not the party: “I get the feeling they are fed up with the whole political atmosphere. They want somebody they know and they can trust.” Steve says many of his Republican friends have expressed that it is time for a change. “I think that having a candidate who is accessible, listening to people, is more important now than straight party voting, “ Steve adds. “I am willing to work with anyone who has a good solution.”

MINNESOTANS’ RESISTANCE TO ICE INVASION INSPIRES LOCAL DFLer TO WRITE A SONG

Steve Holm opened the recent DFL Caucus night in St.Charles by performing a song he had written. He had never done something like that before, but the times are calling on many of us to step out of our comfort zone. Steve, a retired Mayo Clinic IT Lead Analyst, has been playing guitar casually for years, usually strumming anything from country to heavy metal ballads. But a few weeks ago, he was really upset about the illegal and violent actions of ICE agents—especially the killings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti in Minneapolis. “I was talking with my daughter about what was happening, and after she left, I picked up my guitar and started writing this song, Steve shared” Steve had been aware of the protest songs written by Bruce Springsteen and others. He felt that, while those songs might be deeper, they were also darker in spirit. He wanted something that was more encouraging. The resulting song is titled “Pretti Good in Minnesota,” and he has dedicated it to all the people in Minnesota who stood up to ICE. “I wanted to say that around here we don’t retreat into the shadows; instead, we join with friends and neighbors and charge forward with more fervor,” said Steve.
Steve said that this is not the first song he’s written, but it is the first one he’s performed outside of his home. When the St. Charles DFL approached him to play the song to lead off caucus night, he decided, why not? “I’ve always considered myself a real hack,” he said. “I usually play rhythm guitar, nothing fancy. But during COVID I really concentrated more, and I’ve become a bit more proficient.” He has loaded the song onto YouTube;readers can access it at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pi8ptTfzunI
A lot of DFLers think it’s pretty good!

WINONA COUNTY DFL HOLDS BIENNIAL CONVENTION

On Saturday, Feb. 28th, DFL precinct delegates from all around Winona County met for the biennial convention at the Winona Middle School. Delegates, alternates, and visitors got to hear speeches from candidates for State House and Senate. Representatives from MN Senate candidates Angie Craig and Peggy Flanagan also spoke, as did Jake Johnson, who is running to unseat Brad Finstad in the First Congressional District. Mark Ritchie, former Secretary of State, spoke on behalf of current Secretary of State Steve Simon, who is up for reelection. Representatives from two of the candidates for State Auditor addressed the crowd, as did Shivanthi Sathanandan, the MN DFL Second Vice Chair.

Following this, delegates elected Officers and Directors for the county DFL and voted on which resolutions submitted from precincts at the recent county caucus night should go forward to the State DFL Convention. Winona County is allowed to forward 20 resolutions to the convention for possible inclusion in the policy positions the party supports and promotes during the next two years.

The final action of the convention was the selection of the delegation for the First Congressional District Convention and the MN DFL State Convention.

Cut-and-Paste Repinski can't be bothered to write his own posts. When he finally addresses a serious MN issue, he copies someone else and then ignores his constituents when asked why he didn't use his own words. It's hard to know where he stands on an issue when he isn't honest in his communication.

Our local Representative, Aaron Repinski, has finally responded to the recent invasion of Minnesota by ICE and Border Patrol agents--an invasion that has resulted in the shooting death of two Minnesota citizens--by cutting and pasting a statement obviously provided by higher-ups. How do we know? His Facebook post is exactly the same as one put up by Rep. Terry Stier who represents district 22B, just North East of Mankato.
When asked about this blatant example of GOP Representatives copying each other's homework, Winona County DFL Chair Jim Worthley commented, "Whatever you think of the content of this message, wouldn't it be nice if Aaron could take the time to write his own material? Minnesota's Caucus Night is coming up on Tuesday, February 3rd, and local voters attending the DFL caucuses can look forward to hearing from candidates who have their own ideas about how to make things better."
This comes just days after Brad Finstad was caught posting on social media a preplanned message from higher-ups. With all that’s going on in the State of Minnesota at the moment, clearly local GOP leaders are more worried about making their leadership happy than they are addressing the chaos created by their MAGA Agenda.
