Hats off to all of the foster care families who have opened their hearts and their homes to children in crisis. My friend, Cherie, writes eloquently about how critical foster care is for our children and our future. It’s worth the quick read.

May is Foster Care Awareness Month, and as it comes to an end, I want to say thank you to all of the families who have answered the call and stepped into gaps to help children and families.

This month, it’s also been exactly 10 years since Ben and I got licensed as foster parents. We have seen some children come and go from our home, reunified with family forever. We have also adopted children who can’t go back to biological families. Each story in foster care is entirely unique. Each story matters deeply.

Children are our future, and every child has inherent worth that we must protect. Foster care is an important way that we support our future in Minnesota, helping kids and families heal and thrive for generations.

It’s official today: I have filed as a candidate for Minnesota House District 26A.

It has been an honor to be Winona County’s voice at the Capitol. These past two years have been about partnership. People and organizations across the county have told me what is important to them, and their input has guided my work.

I’m proud of the critical legislation that we passed.

• Property tax and car tab relief

• Creation of the Inspector General's office

• Funding for roads, bridges, and water infrastructure

• Modernizing county systems to combat fraud

• School safety

At the same time, there is still more to do. My son, River, who took this picture, is a reminder of the work that is yet to be done. We need to ensure that Minnesota is a place where everyone has the chance to thrive with hard work. Where businesses and farmers can compete. A place where the education system is fair to all students. And a place where our communities are safe.

This is what our children deserve, and I am committed to fighting for it at the Capitol.

Thank you for your support.

It’s another beautiful morning on the river. More importantly, it’s Memorial Day.

Veterans families remind us that freedom isn’t free, and today we honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

Michelle and I thank you.

We also honor those who have lost a family member. A father. A mother. A son. A daughter. An uncle. An aunt. A sibling. A friend. You live with the loss every day and we grieve with you.

We don’t know them all, but we owe them all.

Back in January, the MN Senate introduced a bill to modernize the outdated IT systems that counties rely on to deliver critical services. In February, it was sent to the House. Both the Senate and the House reviewed it thoroughly in committees to ensure the legislation was carefully written.

Today it received its third reading and I spoke in favor of it. It passed in the House 134-0 and now goes to the Governor.

For too long, county workers have been forced to fight broken, decades-old technology. I’m proud that we were able to work together to pass this critical legislation.

We have two long days ahead of us at the Capitol. It is worth the hard work to pass effective legislation that is good for Winona County and good for Minnesota. Anything less than that would be a disservice to the people I represent.

Thank you, District 26A, for trusting me to be your voice at the Capitol!

Today, National Peace Officers Memorial Day, is a poignant reminder that peace officers are putting their lives on the line every day to keep our communities safe. Police officers. Sheriffs and Deputies. State Troopers. Corrections Officers. Probation and Parole Officers. Dispatchers. And everyone who works in law enforcement.

We know the dangers they face and their families face that fear every day.

In 2025, over 130 federal, state, and local law enforcement officers were killed on the line of duty. We grieve for them and for everyone who lost a loved one.

Michelle and I honor all of the peace officers who have died or been disabled in the line of duty.

Now, more than ever, peace officers need our support.

Happy Mother’s Day!

This post is for all of the incredible moms, foster moms, and stepmoms out there. The women who nurture and love their children with a fierceness that defies logic. The women who know that being a mom isn’t just about giving hugs and kisses—sometimes it’s about discipline and teaching their child right from wrong.

It is for the mothers who chose to give birth to a child and then give that child up for adoption. You had other options available, but you cherished your child enough to make their life a priority.

This post is for the mothers who have tragically lost a child. I know this is a poignant day and my heart goes out to you.

This post is also for the women who are struggling to become a mother. The women who hope to one day get the news that they now have a child.

And this post is for the women whose maternal hearts have nurtured us beyond motherhood—aunties, godmothers, mentors, and friends.

Most importantly, this post is for the two moms who have most shaped my life—my own mom, and my wife, Michelle. They are two of the strongest, most loving women I know. They understand that encouragement can come from cheering us on or kicking our butt, and they are equally adept at both skills. Dom, River, and I are blessed to have them in our lives!

To all of you: Thank you and Happy Mother’s Day!

Did you know that Minnesota Safe Schools Revenue is currently not available to charter schools, cooperative units, nonpublic schools, and Tribal contract schools? This fund is set up to provide critical school resource officers, cybersecurity, and mental health services.

All of our children deserve a safe place to learn and thrive. That’s why I am a co-author of HF 3493. This common-sense bill increases the Safe Schools Revenue and makes it available to all schools. It’s the right thing to do.

By the way, this picture of Cotter Schools six graders was taken on the Capitol steps. They are a magnificent reminder of what is at stake with this bill.

The recent Senate omnibus gun control bill is a prime example of good intentions covering up bad legislation. People all over Winona County have been reaching out to me with their concerns. We need smart, effective legislation, and that is exactly what I am fighting for at the Capitol.

It’s a busy time as the session is nearing its close, so I have to play catch-up on posts. This is an important one, and I don’t want to miss it.

In April, a group of Winona Senior High School students visited with me at the legislature. They asked insightful questions and offered wise perspectives.

These young people are our future. Community leaders. Entrepreneurs. Medical professionals. Technical innovators. Educators. Farmers. Public safety professionals. Job creators. Parents. And so much more.

Some of them may even be future legislators. I hope so, because we need their energy and their passion, as well as their insights and knowledge.

That’s why I am working so hard on several pieces of legislation that can impact our children and our education system. I’ll share more details soon as the bills go through the legislative process. It isn’t always easy to get important legislation passed, but these scholars remind me that it is worth the fight.
