With the varied precipitation types occurring with this storm, we are seeing a good example of how Dual Pol radar can help meteorologists forecast winter weather. Correlation coefficient (CC) data from DVN WSR-88D shows the transition zone between a wintry mix & snow.

A strong arctic front will usher in plummeting temperatures well down in the 20s and teens from the west as the day progresses. The very cold temperatures will freeze up lingering wet surfaces and produce even more slick icy surfaces. This on top of the passing rounds of freezing rain and sleet. Strong northwest winds gusting up to 35 to 40 MPH will accompany the temperature crash. The gusty winds interacting with ice coated objects may produce downed branches and power lines. As the wintry mix changes over to all snow this afternoon, the strong winds may also produce drifting and some blowing snow with greatly reduced visibility in the falling snow, especially west of the Mississippi River and north of Interstate 80. Very cold air combining with the winds will produce wind chills of 15 to 25 below zero tonight.

A widespread ice event will begin this afternoon and continue into tonight. Ice accumulations of 0.1 to 0.4 inches are expected with the highest amounts on an axis from near Waukegan, IL to east of Memphis, MO. Extremely hazardous travel will develop late this afternoon and into tonight with the Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning commutes impacted.
