Even though this budget means critical layoffs of teachers and staff, there is no realistic outcome that would have yielded a better result for our schools given the townโ€™s financial situation, rising costs, and the priorities of the supermajority.

I will continue to try and push a forward-thinking vision for our town: one that brings in more businesses and more state funding so that we may properly invest in education, roads, emergency services, and other critical needs without unduly putting it all on the backs of our current taxpayers. I believe our town is worth investing in. I believe every person working for our town is an asset and not a line item. I believe our town's 1000+ children are our town's future.

Thank you to Martin Wallen for an informative tour of the Little Red School House in Wi******er Center! Built in 1815, children of all ages were educated together in one room until 1909. It was one of 7 one or two room schoolhouses in Wi******er Center, but the only one still preserved for our community.

Skipper's Winsted is a great new place to lounge outdoors and enjoy good food. I love that theyโ€™ve created a family friendly environment. There will be an official ribbon cutting at 4:30pm today- attend and check out the place if you can! Since my work schedule prevents me from attending the ribbon cutting, I stopped by for a delicious lunch. I look forward to returning with my family many times this summer!

We had 22 people speak in support of our Pre K-12 teachers in public comment that lasted for over 2 hours. 6 people spoke against, mostly requesting district reform. Selectmen received dozens upon dozens of emails in support of education. Zero emails against. We had a Gilbert student get up herself to advocate for her own education. I want all those people to know, I hear you.

Our town employs expert professionals who work all year to advise on what our town needs. They are town manager Paul Harrington, superintendent Dr. Julie Luby, and Gilbert Head of School Mike Susi. In addition, the chair of the Board of Education told us last night "the BoE has already cut 500k- any more cuts would be devastating".

I understand that there are many different points of view and priorities- that is why we have a referendum.

The role of the BoS is to be another group of eyes and minds reviewing the budget, looking for efficiencies and coming up with new ideas. Our role is not to disregard everything our experts and our BoE tells us, then throw out a big, round, arbitrary number without considering impact.

Selectmen worked together well when looking at the town side. When it came time for last weekโ€™s education budget workshop and last nightโ€™s meeting, some selectmen didnโ€™t even bring their budget binder. They had an arbitrary 1 million dollar cut planned, then closed their ears to a community desperately pleading. There was no middle ground even considered. In response to the pleas of parents with special needs, one selectmen engaged in attacks directly against parents present in the room. Children and their families are regarded as an expensive nuisance, as evidenced by many comments made in public meetings over the last week.

We are now left with an irresponsible budget that benefits no one. In a party line vote, Republicans voted to:
โ‘  raise taxes by 3.3%
โ‘ก lay off teachers and school support staff
โ‘ข pave no roads
