Yesterday we had our End-of-the-Year Celebration with our amazing ESL/ELD teachers!

We recognized the teachers who are retiring at the end of this school year (pictured with flowers), teachers who will be moving into different positions, districts, or even states next year (also celebrated with flowers, although not pictured), and all of our wonderful ESL/ELD colleagues who will continue another year of teaching and learning with us.

We didn’t take many pictures because we were too busy socializing, laughing, celebrating, and enjoying time together. 😊

A HUGE thank you to our incredible community partners for helping make this celebration special:
🌸 Imagine Learning for providing refreshments and sweet treats
🥐 Trader Joe's-Winston Salem,NC for donating pastries
💐 Florist at Adolfos creation LLC; The florist at Harris Teeter; The florist at Harris Teeter Thank you all for generously providing flowers for our teachers.

✨ Spotlight on Great Instruction at Old Richmond ES! ✨

In Ericka Hunt’s ESL classroom at Old Richmond Elementary, you can truly see all the components of a powerful, student-centered lesson in action!

In just a 40-minute lesson, students experienced:
✅ Clearly posted and referenced objectives
✅ Strong visual supports to build comprehension
✅ Clear understanding of their learning goal
✅ Active engagement and participation
✅ Practice across all four language domains — listening, speaking, reading, and writing
✅ Opportunities to present their work to classmates

It’s always inspiring to walk into a classroom where students know what they’re learning, why they’re learning it, and can confidently share their thinking. That level of intentional planning and student ownership doesn’t happen by accident!

We are so proud of the meaningful language development happening at Old Richmond ES. Way to go, Ericka!

I recently read/watched a powerful article/story from Edutopia titled Telling the Story of Learning in Displays of Student Work ( https://www.edutopia.org/video/telling-story-learning-displays-student-work/ ) , and it really resonated with me. The article reminds us that student work on the walls should do more than decorate a space — it should document the learning journey.

It made me think immediately of our incredible ESL teacher, Amy Talley Jefferson Elementary School. If you’ve walked down her hallway or stepped into her classroom, you know it looks absolutely spectacular. But what makes it truly special isn’t just how beautiful it is — it’s how intentionally it tells the story of student growth.

You can see the progression. You can see language development over time. You can see scaffolds, revisions, drafts, and final products. The displays highlight the process, not just the polished product. They celebrate effort, strategy, and growth — especially for our multilingual learners who are building both content knowledge and academic language.

This is what it means to document learning rather than just decorate walls. It’s purposeful. It’s empowering. And it honors the hard work of students and teachers alike.

So proud of the work happening at Jefferson ES and grateful for teachers like Amy who make learning visible every single day.

Our ESL students in Heather Pereda’s ESL class at Piney Grove Elementary School had an absolute blast designing and testing their own launchers! 🚀

After building their launchers, students conducted test flights and then made scientific predictions about what would cause their launchers to fly or jump higher. Was it more force? A tighter twist? A different angle? They analyzed, adjusted, and tested again!

The best part? They were using rich scientific vocabulary in a playful, hands-on setting — naturally discussing force, height, prediction, results, and cause and effect while laughing and cheering each other on.

Learning was active. Learning was loud. Learning was FUN.

So proud of these young scientists and the intentional language development happening in our ESL classrooms every day!
