This notice serves to inform that the Statewide Burn Ban will be lifted at 8am on Friday, May 8th. Your cooperation over the last month is greatly appreciated. We remind everyone that caution is still necessary when burning due to the existing rainfall deficit.

Statewide Burn Ban Update. As of May 3rd, 8am, the Statewide Burn Ban is being partially lifted for certain regions. Specifically, the ban will be lifted for the eastern and western parts of the state. However, Forsyth County remains under the ban, along with 18 other counties, due to the lack of rainfall in the Piedmont region. The current ban in Forsyth County applies to burns greater than 100 feet from occupied dwellings. Burns within 100 feet of occupied dwellings were exempted from the ban by the Forsyth County Fire Marshall Office as of April 29th. Given the dry conditions, residents are reminded to use caution when engaging in outdoor burning to prevent fires from spreading rapidly.

The Forsyth County Fire Marshall's Office has lifted the countrywide burn ban, effective 8am this morning, but only for areas within 100 feet of an occupied dwelling. The NC Forestry Service Statewide burn ban remains in effect for areas beyond 100 feet from an occupied dwelling. Residents who choose to burn in permitted areas are reminded to vigilantly monitor their fires, maintain a readily available water supply, and remain attentive to changing weather conditions.

Please remember no open outdoor burning. This includes the area within 100ft of your house as the Forsyth County Fire Marshall office is following the same guidelines as the Forestry Service.

The statewide burn ban remains in effect until further notice despite weekend rain in some areas. Persistent dry weather and increasing rainfall deficits from the last several months have left most of the state needing 10 inches of rain or more.

“While the rainfall we received over the weekend was a welcome sight, it offered little to no relief from widespread drought conditions while being nowhere near enough to reduce our wildfire risk,” said Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler. “Even the areas that received the heaviest amount of rain will quickly dry out from the sunshine and warmer temperatures. Until we get some additional rain and see more green-up in our forests, holding the burn ban in place statewide is the best option right now.”

While green-up and leaf-out are progressing at normal rate, low soil moisture, dry surface fuels and persistent low humidity are contributing to wildfire activity. For Western North Carolina, excessive forest fuels from Hurricane Helene are more available now than they were in 2025, low water levels in coastal areas have helped produce intense fire behavior where ground fire will likely be a long-term issue, and the Piedmont experienced 87 new wildfire starts over the weekend alone. Extended attack and mop-up efforts will be taxing and long-winded until drought conditions improve.
