STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA vs SARAH SANTIAGO

North Carolina Woman Indicted in Connection to Islamic Center of San Diego Shooting Winston-Salem, North Carolina– Forsyth County District Attorney Jim O'Neill announced a North Carolina Grand Jury indicted 17-year-old Sarah Lindsey Santiago as an adult for the following state charges:

Three Counts of First-Degree Murder
One Count of Conspiracy to Commit First-Degree Murder

According to the indictment returned on August 31, 2026, Santiago with malice and aforethought did aid and abet Caleb Vazquez and Cain Clark in the killing and murder of three people at the Islamic Center of San Diego on May 18, 2026, by agreeing and planning prior to the attack to: live stream the attacks, disseminate the recording publicly and then release the manifesto authored by attackers to justify the attack.

The FBI Charlotte Joint Terrorism Task Force Greensboro Resident Agency, the Winston-Salem Police Department, FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force in San Diego and San Diego Police Department, with assistance from the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office, are investigating the case.

Project Lifesaver is a new initiative here in Forsyth County dedicated to helping protect some of our most vulnerable community members.

The mission of Project Lifesaver is to reduce the time and resources required to locate individuals who go missing. Many participants in the program have cognitive or physical conditions that may make them more likely to wander and more difficult to find. By equipping participants with specialized tracking technology, first responders can locate them more quickly during critical situations, improving outcomes while reducing the resources needed for search and rescue operations.

We are grateful for our partnership with the Town of Lewisville and the Lewisville Fire Department as we work together to bring this valuable program to our community.

Reagan High School Student Charged with Ethnic Intimidation

Forsyth County NC - On Friday, August 28, 2026, at approximately 11:29 a.m., personnel with the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) School Resource Division at Reagan High School received information regarding a juvenile who had posted racially motivated threats on social media while displaying what appeared to be an assault rifle.

FCSO personnel identified the juvenile suspect, who is a student at Reagan High School, and conducted an investigation. The assault rifle depicted in the social media post was located and seized by FCSO personnel at the juvenile’s residence.
Due to the juvenile’s age, their identity cannot be released.

FCSO personnel contacted the North Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice regarding the incident. A secure custody order was issued for the juvenile, charging him with the following:

• Ethnic Intimidation — N.C.G.S. § 14-401.14(a), Class 1 misdemeanor

The juvenile was taken to a juvenile detention center in Guilford County with a first court appearance on Monday, August 31st, 2026.

The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office takes all threats of violence seriously and works closely with school officials and the Department of Juvenile Justice to ensure the safety of students, staff, and the community.

Winston Salem NC - The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) is making the public aware of increased coyote activity on and around the Forsyth Technical Community College campus located at 2100 Silas Creek Parkway in Winston-Salem, NC. Earlier today, August 28, 2026, FCSO Animal Services Deputies responded to the campus regarding a coyote that had become trapped in a fence. The animal was safely freed and subsequently ran into a nearby wooded area.

Officials have reported an estimated 10 to 15 coyotes living in or frequenting wooded areas of the campus. Staff members have reported that some of the coyotes appear to have begun approaching people as well as domestic animals. Because of the increased activity and reported behavior of the coyotes, the FCSO encourages members of the public to exercise additional caution in this area.

Public Safety Recommendations:
• Avoid walking dogs on the Forsyth Tech campus, particularly near wooded areas.
• Keep pets under close supervision and do not allow them to roam unattended.
• Secure trash, pet food, outdoor feeding stations, and other potential food sources that may attract coyotes.
• Never intentionally feed or approach a coyote.
• Maintain a safe distance if a coyote is observed and allow the animal an opportunity to leave the area.
• Owners of female dogs in heat should take additional precautions and keep their animals securely confined. Coyotes are capable of breeding with domestic dogs, creating coyote-dog hybrids.
• Ensure domestic animals are current on their rabies vaccinations.

The FCSO also reminds residents that rabies remains a significant public-health concern in Forsyth County. Any wild animal displaying unusual behavior, including a lack of fear of people, aggression, disorientation, or other abnormal behavior, should not be approached. Anyone who encounters an aggressive coyote should immediately move to a safe location, secure pets and children, and contact law enforcement or Animal Services at 336-727-2112.

The FCSO will continue to monitor the situation and work with Forsyth Tech and appropriate wildlife professionals to help protect students, employees, visitors, and surrounding residents.

The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office is proud to welcome three new K-9s to our family!

Yesterday, we officially welcomed K-9 Jade, K-9 Charlie, and K-9 Farley during their official swearing-in ceremony.

K-9 Jade is a four-year-old Belgian Malinois/German Shepherd mix who serves alongside Lieutenant Carter as a certified patrol K-9.

K-9 Charlie and K-9 Farley are one-year-old Plott Hounds, North Carolina’s official state dog! Both are certified to assist in locating missing individuals. Charlie is partnered with Corporal Rae and serves with JIIT, while Farley is partnered with Corporal Curry in Field Services.

We are excited to welcome these three talented K-9s to The FCSO family and look forward to all they will accomplish alongside their handlers. Welcome to the team, Jade, Charlie, and Farley! 🐾💙

The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office is one of the few law enforcement agencies in North Carolina to utilize the Plott Hound, North Carolina’s State Dog, as part of our K9 Unit.

These highly skilled K9s play an important role in helping locate lost and missing persons and bring them home safely. We’re proud to put this unique North Carolina breed to work protecting and serving our community... And that’s a fact! 🐾
