Dr. Harvey R. Durham made a lasting impact on this national park through his years of service as a trustee and advisor to the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation. We were so sorry to learn of his passing earlier this month.

A lifelong educator and public servant, Dr. Durham supported generations of students at Appalachian State University as the university’s chief academic officer, provost, and acting chancellor. His remarkable legacy at the university is reflected in awards and campus landmarks bearing his name, including Durham Park, which honors the years of service Durham and his wife, Susan, gave to Appalachian State.

Harvey’s dedication to the N.C. High Country extended to supporting the care and preservation of Moses H. Cone Memorial Park near Blowing Rock through the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation. As a trustee, he played an important role in improvements at Price Lake and Rough Ridge. A former board chair, Harvey was inducted into our Abbott-Everhardt Society in 2022. The Foundation’s board, staff, and volunteers are grateful for Dr. Durham’s years of service to the Parkway. Please join us in sharing our condolences with his family.

Head to the Blue Ridge Music Center to hear Songs From The Road Band + Larry Sigmon and The Virginia Girls at 7 p.m., Saturday, May 30, in the outdoor amphitheater.

Asheville-based bluegrass supergroup Songs From The Road Band is known for its compelling blend of Americana, roots, and folk music. The band is celebrated for intricate harmonies, masterful instrumentation, and engaging live performances that weave a rich tapestry of original songs and innovative covers to balance tradition with modern influences.

The legendary Larry Sigmon from Callaway, Va., has a signature hard-driving style of banjo playing and singing like no other. Best known for his duo with Barbara Poole, he continues to be a favorite among flatfoot dancers and now plays with The Virginia Girls featuring Heather Krantz and Susan Blankenship.

The Grammy-winning lead singer of The Earls of Leicester, Camp mastered guitar, mandolin, and fiddle before he could drive. A prolific songwriter, he has penned hits for Willie Nelson, Garth Brooks, and Blake Shelton, and has been a trusted collaborator of John Prine, Loretta Lynn, and Guy Clark. His latest release, The Ghost of Sis Draper, immerses listeners in a sharply drawn world where the hero is a fiddle-wielding woman.

Wayne C. Henderson is an accomplished luthier and performer from Rugby, Va. In addition to handcrafting guitars that musicians around the world covet, Henderson has won more than 300 ribbons at fiddlers’ convention competitions and is a National Endowment for the Arts National Heritage Fellow.

Great news about Mabry Mill from the National Park Service! The Blue Ridge Parkway announced today that it has selected MM176, LLC for a 10-year concessions contract to provide food, beverage and retail services in the restaurant and gift shop adjacent to the historic Mabry Mill on the Blue Ridge Parkway. The new operator is planning interior renovations in 2026 and is planning to open its food and retail services to the public in spring 2027. The Parkway awarded the new concessions contract through a competitive selection process.

“We are excited to see food service return to this historic Parkway destination and look forward to working with the new operator over the next decade at Mabry Mill.” said Tracy Swartout, Blue Ridge Parkway Superintendent. “The new operator’s upcoming investment at the site builds on other recent investments such as the rehabilitation of Matthews Cabin and a new roof and wheel on the Mill Building. As the new operator prepares for renovations, there is still much to enjoy and do at Mabry Mill and in nearby communities, such as Meadows of Dan and Floyd, where a wide variety of food services are available.”

During the 2026 visitor season, NPS staff and volunteers at Mabry Mill will regularly host educational programs, cultural demonstrations such as blacksmithing, music events and walking tours. Beginning June 7, the Blue Ridge Music Center will host Milepost Music concerts for the first and third Sundays throughout the summer. Food truck vendor opportunities are also available for the upcoming visitor season. Interested parties should contact [email protected] for more information.

For Monthly Giving Week, we're sharing the heart behind one form of support that keeps the Blue Ridge Parkway vibrant. Many of our donors first fell in love with the Parkway while riding in the backseat of a family car or stepping onto their first mountain trail. For Keaton McMillon, those childhood memories inspired him to become Parkway Protector through our monthly giving program.

"My time on [the] Parkway, my time at picnic areas with family, and my time on Price Lake … those memories never fade and will stay with me for years to come. I want others to experience the Parkway the same way I do. I see being a Parkway Protector as a way to give back to something I’ve always loved and held near to my heart. The Blue Ridge Parkway is my safe space -- I believe it knows me better than I know myself."
- Keaton McMillon, Parkway Protector

Monthly gifts provide the sustaining support needed to maintain trails, overlooks, picnic areas, and historic sites that make these memories possible. Read Keaton’s complete Parkway story at https://brpfoundation.org/parkway-protector-keaton-mcmillon/
