Another unforgettable Old School Block Party has come and gone. The two-night outdoor festivities brought together live music, community, great food, and the soulful sounds of classic R&B, jazz, funk, and more in the heart of Winston-Salem. The unfortunate rainy weather prevented some of the planned entertainment from performing, but that didn’t stop attendees from enjoying the party! A heartfelt thank you to all those that were a part of it and the other events in the International Black Theatre Festival. 💛💜

We are seeking volunteers, donations, and vendors for this year’s Project Homeless Connect, a one-day event dedicated to connecting individuals in our community experiencing homelessness with resources and support. The event offers free health screenings, housing resources, career and education services, veterans’ services, and essential supplies.

Drop off donations before Sept. 15 at the Dream Center or the Bryce A. Stuart Building entrance. We need the following:

Boil Water Advisory Lifted for All Customers ‼️

Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Utilities just announced that the boil water advisory has been lifted, effective immediately, for all customers. Laboratory testing has confirmed that water throughout all impacted areas of the distribution system is safe for consumption, and customers may return to normal water use.
 
The advisory was issued following a loss of system pressure that created the potential for back siphonage and the introduction of harmful bacteria into the water distribution system. This precautionary measure was necessary to ensure compliance with state regulations and reporting requirements while water quality testing was conducted.
 
In addition, repairs have been successfully completed on the damaged water main that contributed to the service disruption. Testing and evaluation of the newly installed section of pipe are currently underway. Results from those tests are expected to be available for review the morning of Saturday, August 1. Once testing confirms the line meets all water quality and operational requirements, the repaired main will be returned to service. 
 
Staff continue to monitor system recovery efforts, and customer water conservation remains important during this phase until the repaired main is placed into service.

“Providing safe, reliable water service is one of our core responsibilities, and our team recognizes that water is critical to public health, safety, and strength of our community,” said WSFC Utilities Director Courtney Driver. “Our employees work hard around the clock to maintain the system we all depend on. We will evaluate this event and implement improvements to further strengthen system reliability.”
 
We thank you for your patience and cooperation throughout the incident, as well as emergency response partners, neighboring utilities, and local and regional agencies for their assistance, resources, and expertise throughout the recovery effort.

Boil Water Advisory Rescinded for Portions of Impacted Area ⚠️

Water service has been restored to all Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Utilities customers affected by the July 29 water main break. Effective immediately, the boil water advisory has been lifted for a portion of the impacted area after laboratory testing confirmed the water is safe for human consumption. ‼️ Customers in the remaining impacted area must continue to boil water until additional testing is completed and notice is given.
 
The interactive map has been updated to allow customers to enter their address to determine if they remain in the boil water advisory area: https://experience.arcgis.com/experience/03b745387c334f44a06800bbc732bfda
 
Water samples have been collected throughout the remaining impacted area, and test results will be confirmed on Friday, July 31. Additional information will be shared once those results have been reviewed.

Answers to frequently asked questions:

Drinking Water 💧
Do not drink water unless it has been commercially bottled or boiled. This applies to filtered water and ice from your fridge as well. Vigorous boiling for one minute is sufficient to kill any disease-causing organisms that may be present in the water.

Washing Dishes 🫧
If possible, use disposable plates, cups, and utensils during a boil water advisory. Sanitize all baby bottles.

Dishwashers are generally safe to use if they have a sanitizing cycle or reach a final rinse temperature of at least 150°F (66°C). Check the manual or contact the manufacturer to find out what temperature your dishwater reaches.

If handwashing dishes, only use boiled water or commercially bottled water.

Caring for Pets 🐾
Give pets commercially bottled water or boiled water that has cooled. Pets can get sick from contaminated water just as humans can.

Brushing Teeth 🪥
Brush your teeth using boiled water or commercially bottled water. Do not use tap water that you have not boiled first.

Bathing and Showering 🛁
Be careful not to swallow any water when bathing or showering.

Use caution when bathing babies and young children. Consider giving them a sponge bath to reduce the chance of them swallowing water.

Laundry 🧺
It is safe to wash clothes as usual.
