Born January 13,1850 Charlotte E. Ray was born in New York. Ray graduated from Howard University school of Law in 1872,and went on to be admitted to the District of Columbia bar that same year.

Charlotte E. Ray would become the first African American female lawyer in the United States, while being active in the Suffrage movement. Ray also became the first African American female attorney to be granted permission to argue cases in front of the United States Supreme Court. She would go on to practice commercial Law, then retired as a school teacher.
