Save Grinnell House

Save Grinnell House The Grinnell House, built in the 1900s, is one of the oldest homes in Winter Park, FL. It's a 2 story brick colonial and it deserves to be saved.

Let's SAVE GRINNELL HOUSE! It was located next to the historic Lakemont Dairy that served Winter Park for 50 years and was later bought by TG Lee, the dairy we all know today in the area and around the nation. Because the home was built so long ago there is not a clear documented history of the home or its inhabitants. The last documented transaction was from a Mary Groves to a Charles F. Grinnell

in 1909, presumably with a structure on it. This would make the house over 100 years old. I want to save this house from demolition. If anyone knows of a non-profit that would be willing to help my campaign I’d love to help them raise the money to restore the home for their needs. If all else fails, I’d like to save the brick so part of the house is left in the community. If anyone has any advice on how to help on any of the above, please reach out ([email protected]). My goal in forming this page is to raise awareness about historical preservation in our small Winter Park community. If this page does nothing else except motivate others that live in historic homes and care about preservation to list their homes on the Winter Park Historic Register I’ll be happy. Thank you for taking the time to like and share this page with friends and family. Please visit the gofundme page as well to donate (www.gofundme.com/Save-Grinnell-House). Kind regards,

Win/Lose today at the commission meeting! Commissioners voted in favor of the lot split either on Grinnell OR Lakemont. The developer has a great opportunity to save the house, although conversations after the meeting demonstrated they won't move in that direction. Some amazing dialogue though with Carolyn Cooper and Greg Seidel asking some very important questions that were unfortunately ignored by others on the Commission:
1. Historical Designation - Just because the homeowner does not wish to designate the house doesn't mean the house does not hold historical value
2. Viability of Moving the House - No one visited the site to check if this was an option
3. Structural Condition of the house - No reports by a structural engineer were presented at the meeting
4. Financial Implication of Renovating the House - Donations and Grants were dismissed as impossible feats, although these are readily available in the community
5. Giving the Community Time to React

New Update: The house may be older than I thought! The Orange County Property Search says 1925, but after researching at the Winter Park Public Library, Rollins College Olin Library and talking to their helpful historians I reached out to the Property appraisers for more accurate information. There is a sale record of this parcel from Mary Groves to Charles F. Grinnell in 1909, assumably with this home on it. This house may have just aged considerably!!!

The property appraisers said the following:

"I spoke to our appraisers and they indicated that the “1925” date was just an arbitrary date they put on a structure if they do not have any property details. The problem is that back then there were only hand written documents for assessment and those are not existent today. You will find that a lot of older properties in the county will have the same year built date of 1925.
On this property we know Mr. Grinnell bought the property in 1909 from somebody else so the assumption is there must have also been a structure there too."

WOW!!! Help Winter Park, Florida and Orange County, Florida save it's history! Save Grinnell House

Rendering of a potential restoration of the Grinnell house. Obviously other designs could be utilized, we even considered putting a front stoop on the house, but wanted to keep it as close to original as possible. Hope you'll enjoy! Thanks Wade Martin for taking the time to do this for us!

I'm looking more into this, but the house may have been on the Lakemont Ward Dairy property or neighbor to it. The Ward family provided milk to their neighbors and served Winter Park for almost 50 years! It was later bought by T.G Lee Dairy! Cool piece of Orlando, Florida and Orange County, Florida history!
