Picacho State Recreation Area At the turn of the twentieth century, Picacho was a gold mining town with 2,500 citizens.

Today, the State Recreation Area offers camping, hiking, angling, boating, and more.

4S Beach Campground will be closed for a special event from September 23 through September 25, 2024.

If you are planning a visit, please note:

Campsites number 17 through 25 at the Main Campground will be unavailable from October 1 through December 31, 2024.

The sites will be occupied by California State Parks’ Statewide Trails Crew and the California Conservation Corps as they work on the Stewart Lake Trail. Campers at the Main Campground located near the Stewart Lake Trail may experience increased noise due to the trail work. Stewart Lake Trail will be partially closed in the interest of visitor safety. We apologize for any inconvenience and invite visitors to revisit the Stewart Lake Overlook upon planned project completion at the end of February 2025.

Discover naturally occurring California Fan Palm groves in this otherworldly ecosystem. Explore the San Andreas Fault and its impact on the area. Enjoy a peaceful desert escape that is surprisingly close to the city. There will be plenty of time for discussion and questions on this casual hike.

⚠️ NOTICE - October 4, 2023 - February 28, 2024:

Campers at Picacho's Main Campground may experience increased noise due to trail work.

Stewart Lake Trail will be partially closed in the interest of visitor safety.

We apologize for any inconvenience and invite visitors to revisit the Stewart Lake Overlook upon project completion in March 2024.

The boat launch at the Lower Dock is closed until further notice.

⚠️Picacho State Recreation Area is currently INACCESSIBLE. Picacho Road and Indian Pass Road are currently impassable due to 9/1/2023 storm damage.

Damage to be assessed and updates to follow in the coming day.

Out of an abundance of caution for the safety of visitors and employees during , please take note of the following closures:

- Los Angeles County: Parking lots for state beaches are temporarily closed today, August 20. We're working diligently to navigate this situation and appreciate your cooperation.

- Orange and San Diego Counties: All state beaches are temporarily closed, August 20-21. Your safety is our top priority, and we appreciate your understanding.

- Inland State Parks: Parks in the storm's path will also be closed due to flooding concerns.

During the storm, limiting outdoor activities and staying out of the ocean is crucial. Your safety matters to us, and we're committed to keeping you informed and protected.
