IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING ABSENTEE BALLOT REQUEST FORMS:

New election laws prohibit our office from providing Absentee Ballot Request Forms to anyone but the voter. We can no longer provide forms to a voter on behalf of another voter.
If you are needing an absentee ballot request form for someone other than yourself, they will have to personally request one from us.

Below is the law SF 413 Sec. 43; Code Sec. 53.2(1)(c) that was signed on March 8, 2021.

The commissioner may send an absentee ballot application to a registered voter at the request of the registered voter. The commissioner shall not send an absentee ballot application to a person who has not submitted such a request.

Forms can allows be printed from our website: https://madisoncounty.iowa.gov/offices/auditor/elections/

Q: What happens to my voted ballot when I vote absentee?

A: Your ballot remains in the sealed return envelope and is stamped received and marked in the statewide voter system as a returned ballot. It is then placed in a locked ballot box (with a temper evident seal) where it remains in your sealed return envelope with your signature until the Absentee Board convenes on Monday, November 2nd. At that time, the team will begin opening the envelopes. On Tuesday, November 3rd the ballots will be counted by our Absentee team with our ballot counting machine, at that time results will be tallied. Absentee ballots are NOT counted until Election Day. The County Auditor and the Chair of the Absentee Board will reconcile ballot numbers to ensure the number of sealed envelopes given to the Absentee team matches the number of ballots run through the ballot counting machine on Election Day.
