We have started seeing more “e-bikes”. “e-scooters”, and motorized bikes throughout town.

Many of the ones we see are actually classified as motorized bikes or off-road motorcycles due to their power, speed capabilities, or design. In Iowa, an e-bike is limited to a motor of 750 watts or less and must meet specific requirements to fall within the e-bike classifications, such as having pedals.

We understand that electric bikes and scooters are a fun, efficient, and increasingly popular way for both kids and adults to get around. Our goal isn’t to discourage their use it’s to ensure riders are operating them legally and safely.

Please review the graphic below, created by the Iowa DOT, to better understand the differences between e-bikes, e-scooters, mopeds/motorized bikes, motorcycles, and off-road motorcycles, including where they can be ridden, who can ride them, and what other rules apply. Don’t forget to have this conversation with your kids also.

Please join us in congratulating Captain Roger Shortt on his retirement today!!

After 31 years in law enforcement with the Winterset PD and the Madison County Sheriff's Office, Captain Shortt is riding off into the sunset to enjoy a well-earned retirement. Over the years, Captain Shortt worked as a patrol officer, investigator, evidence technician, Captain, interim Police Chief, and the go-to knowledge base for so many officers.

Thank you, Captain Shortt, for your many years of dedicated, professional, and distinguished service to our community. We will be forever grateful for the many lives and hearts you've touched throughout the years. We wish you the best in your retirement!

To encourage safe decision-making and help prevent impaired driving during the holiday festivities, the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau is partnering with local law enforcement for a high-visibility enforcement campaign July 2-6.

We need help identifying a suspect. Bomgaars has had their pallets stolen several times over the past couple of months. The most recent theft happened on 6/24/2026 at about 05:30 am. If anyone has any information on either of these vehicles or the males pictured, please contact the Winterset Police Department. 515-462-1423. Thank you!

UPDATE - she has been found safe. Thank you all.

**MISSING CHILD**
Kaylee Redmond, a 10- year-old girl was last seen around 0600. She left the N 8th Ave apts (1105 N 8th Ave). Her bike was found near the intersection of N 2nd Ave and W North st. If anyone has seen her or has any information, please contact the Winterset Police Department. 515-462-1423.
