Warmer temps with falling snow will make for a slushy & messy next few days. The remaining snow will be very heavy and difficult to push or move.

Precipitation is back in the forecast for an extended period beginning late tonight and continuing into Friday. Light snow, mixed at times with rain is expected on and off during this time with light to moderate accumulations over much of central Iowa by late Friday. Temperatures will be near freezing for much of the event, so some melting from roads and highways is expected during the day. However, at night, roads and highways may see snow and slush accumulate leading to hazardous travel. For the latest updates on the forecast, please visit us at www.weather.gov/dmx

Thu evening - We're getting a lot of questions regarding when the snow will begin, and when the heaviest snow will fall. These are projected windows for when the snow will begin. The heaviest snowfall should be for the next several hours after these start windows. The weather you wake up to will likely be dramatically different that what you see later in the morning into midday. Be prepared for quickly changing weather and road conditions. Brisk winds will also accompany the heavier snowfall period further reducing visibilities.

Yes, there is a winter storm on our doorstep Friday. However, there is other winter weather to impact Iowa before then. Freezing drizzle is forecast for your Wednesday morning commute and sub-zero wind chills are anticipated for Thursday morning.

***For the Winter Storm on Friday***
✅ We're confident of the widespread accumulating snow to start over western Iowa and spread east through the late morning hours.
✅ We're confident in the impacts of snow covered roads, blowing and drifting snow and reduced visibility to lead to dangerous travel and delays.
✅ We're confident that the higher snowfall amounts look to be north of Interstate 80.
✅ We'll have additional updates later today!

A large winter storm will impact Iowa through the end of the week with two episodes of wintry precipitation. The first will be in the form of snow through central Iowa, with a wintry mix including freezing rain south. After a brief break late tonight the last of the system will move through with more snow across the southeast half of Iowa from midday Saturday into early Saturday evening. This will result in hazardous travel conditions, including impacting the drive time and commute this Friday evening. Please check the latest forecast and road conditions before heading out. Controlled Burn in lower City Park Monday, December 23.

Beginning around noon on Monday, December 23, a controlled burn will take place in portions of the lower City Park (south of the South Shelter). The burn is part of the City’s ongoing efforts to increase management practices to improve the woodlands. No vehicles will be allowed on the tower road. Hikers shall stay on the road and away from any fire/smoke.
Controlled burns will be an annual practice in City Park lower portion during late fall through early spring as conditions allow. Other practices that we have implemented as part of our adopted City Park Woodlands Conservation Plan include removing a large amount of honeysuckle (invasive species) and thinning out the timber by removing some trees. Please contact the WPRD Office with any questions/concerns at 462-3258.

Update: The upgrade has been completed and the DMX radar has returned to service!

Previous:
Beginning December 2nd, 2019, the KDMX WSR-88D operated by NOAA’s National Weather Service in Des Moines (Johnston), Iowa will be out of service for approximately two weeks for an important upgrade. Technicians will refurbish and replace the pedestal, one of the most critical components of the radar, which is necessary for antenna rotation and positioning to capture data in all directions. The components are extremely heavy and will require the radome to be removed by crane and replaced when the work is completed.
