Helping Spread the Word for a Community Partner

Our community Partners at Winthrop Harbor Memorial VFW Post 7448 are seeking sponsors to help local veterans become VFW Lifetime Members, with a special focus on Korean and Vietnam era veterans.

For veterans on fixed incomes, annual dues can be a real burden. A sponsorship covers that cost for good, so a veteran can stay connected to the fellowship, support, and community they earned, while helping keep our local Post strong for generations to come.

With Veterans Day approaching, it’s a meaningful way to say thank you.

AT RISK RESIDENTS

The Winthrop Harbor Police Department is introducing a new program designed to enhance how officers assist community members who may be at risk due to cognitive, developmental, or communication challenges. This new system operates as an added module to the software our agency already uses successfully for business keyholder information, vacation watches, and directed patrols.

At risk residents may include elderly individuals living with Dementia or Alzheimer’s, as well as children or adults with Autism, intellectual disabilities, or other neurodevelopmental disorders.

This program enables officers to quickly identify non verbal, disoriented, or otherwise vulnerable residents and reunite them with their loved ones or connect them with appropriate emergency services. By having essential information readily accessible, officers can respond more efficiently and with greater care during critical moments.

All information provided through this system is kept strictly confidential and will only be shared with emergency personnel when necessary.

Suspicious package

On 9/1/26 at approximately 3PM, the Winthrop Harbor Police Department responded to a residence in the 1800 blk of 13th St. for a report of a suspicious package.

The package had been delivered to the residence but was addressed to a person who had not resided at the home since approximately 2013. After becoming concerned about the package, the current resident contacted police.

Responding officers assessed the circumstances, secured the immediate area, and requested assistance from the Waukegan Bomb Squad as a precaution.

Bomb Squad personnel responded and examined the package. The package was ultimately determined to pose no threat and the scene was cleared.

No injuries were reported, and there is no known threat to the public.

The Winthrop Harbor Police Department appreciates the cooperation of the residents and surrounding community while officers and assisting agencies worked to safely resolve the incident.

No additional information is available at this time.
