⚠️ ELECTRIC SCOOTER & E-BIKE SAFETY REMINDER ⚠️
The Winthrop Police Department has recently received several complaints and questions regarding the use of electric scooters, e-bikes, and other electric vehicles on our roadways.
Today, we had a close call that could have ended very differently.
A motorist traveling on a city street was forced to take an evasive maneuver to avoid colliding with a young rider on an electric scooter. The rider reportedly entered the intersection without slowing or stopping for a stop sign and without looking for approaching traffic.
The rider was also reportedly wearing earbuds, was not wearing a helmet, and appeared unaware of the approaching vehicle, even as the driver sounded the horn and came within inches of a collision.
Thankfully, no one was injured. However, this incident serves as an important reminder that riding an electric scooter or e-bike on or near a roadway comes with serious responsibilities.
Please remember:
• Obey stop signs and all applicable traffic laws.
• Remove earbuds and other distractions while riding.
• Look both ways and make sure traffic has stopped or the roadway is clear before entering an intersection.
• Wear a properly fitted helmet.
• Stay alert and aware of vehicles, pedestrians, and your surroundings at all times.
• Never assume a driver sees you.
Parents and guardians: If you allow your child to operate an electric scooter, e-bike, or similar vehicle, please take the time to discuss traffic safety and the responsibility that comes with operating it on or near a public roadway.
A few seconds of inattention can have lifelong consequences.
Please slow down, pay attention, follow the rules of the road.
