On Monday, August 31, in recognition of International Overdose Awareness Day, empty chairs will be displayed at locations throughout Winthrop. Each chair represents someone whose absence is deeply felt—a family member, friend, neighbor, or loved one lost to substance use or overdose.

Community members who have experienced loss are invited to help personalize the chairs by contributing a photograph, written message, ribbon, flower, or other small remembrance. Together, these mementos will honor the lives behind the numbers and create a visible expression of remembrance, love, and connection.

If you would like to contribute, please see the directions below. We recommend providing copies of photographs and avoiding valuable or irreplaceable items, as the installation will be displayed outdoors.

Every chair holds a story. Every life deserves to be remembered. 💜

How to Contribute

Please submit items by Thursday, August 27.

Items may be dropped off Monday through Thursday, between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., at:

Winthrop Department of Public Health & Clinical Services
E.B. Newton Building
45 Pauline Street, Winthrop

Photographs, messages, or other printable contributions may also be emailed to [email protected].

HELP US HONOR AND REMEMBER

On Monday, August 31, 13–15 empty chairs will be placed throughout Winthrop—each representing lives lost to overdose and the loved ones whose absence is felt every day.

Community Chair-Making Gathering
Sunday, August 30
2:00–6:00 PM
E.B. Newton Building
45 Pauline Street, Winthrop

Community members are invited to help prepare the chairs and contribute photographs, mementos, written memories, artwork, flowers, ribbons, or other meaningful items honoring someone they love.

Come for as much or as little time as you are able.

Together, we remember. Together, we reduce stigma.

The Winthrop Department of Public Health & Clinical Services was informed today that a mosquito sample collected in our community has tested positive for West Nile Virus. The species of mosquito that was collected primarily feeds on birds, rather than humans. Despite this, it is important that we understand that there is an increased risk level in our community and that steps should be taken to prevent mosquito bites. Please visit https://www.winthropma.gov/DocumentCenter/View/516/West-Nile-Virus-Fact-Sheet-PDF and also https://www.nemassmosquito.org/sites/g/files/vyhlif4751/f/uploads/preventingbites.pdf.
