Rest easy Chief

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of retired Waldoboro Fire Chief Richard W. Glidden.

Chief Glidden began his fire service career as a junior firefighter in Thomaston while still in high school. After moving to Waldoboro, he immediately dedicated himself to the community as a member of the Waldoboro Fire Department. He went on to become the town’s first Deputy Fire Chief, serving alongside his cousin and then-Fire Chief, Robert Maxcy. Following Chief Maxcy’s passing, Chief Glidden stepped into the role of Fire Chief, a position he held with honor and distinction until 2008.

Even after retiring as Fire Chief, “Dick” remained one of the most active members of the department—responding to more calls than any other member. He was an avid pump operator and always the first to grab a broom and help clean up.

Chief Glidden took immense pride in serving his community through the fire department. His more than 68 years of service were marked by unwavering dedication, humility, and a deep concern for the wellbeing of others. His legacy is one of selflessness and integrity.

Firefighter honors will be accorded to Chief Glidden at 11:00 AM this Saturday, September 20th, at the Waldoboro Fire Station.

Fire apparatus should meet at the Strong-Hancock Funeral Home on Main Street in Damariscotta.

Family, friends and fire personnel in Class A uniforms are asked to gather at the Waldoboro Fire Station.

For additional information, please feel free to contact Chief Smeltzer.

Rest in peace, Chief Glidden, you have answered your last alarm.

You have trained us well by your example.

We’ve got it from here.
