Many people have a long weekend and hopefully you can find ways to enjoy that time off. Still, let us try take a moment out of our day to solemnly reflect on what this holiday is about â honoring the men and women who protected our liberty by giving their lives in service to our country.
Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day and was proclaimed by General John A. Logan following the Civil War. Gen. Logan was a sitting Congressman who, at the breakout of the Civil War, resigned from office and volunteered to return to service for the Union Army. The traditional date this holiday was celebrated was May 30 of every year. It wasnât until after World War I that this holiday evolved further to honor those who lost their lives in all American wars. In 1971 Congress established that Memorial Day will be celebrated on the last Monday of May each year.
âFor love of country they accepted death, and thus resolved all doubts, and made immortal their patriotism and their virtue.â â James A. Garfield, former Union General, U.S. Congressman, and President of the United States.
