Wise County Observes Child Abuse Prevention Month
Wise County Department of Social Services – Child Protection Unit
Wise County, Virgina- The Wise County Department of Social Services Child Protection Unit joins communities across Virginia and the nation in recognizing Child Abuse Prevention Month this April. This month is dedicated to raising awareness, strengthening families, and renewing the community’s commitment to protecting children from abuse and neglect.
Throughout April, the Child Protection Unit is focusing on prevention efforts, public awareness, and community education to highlight the importance of recognizing warning signs, supporting families, and reporting concerns to the appropriate authorities. Prevention remains central to child welfare work, with an emphasis on early intervention, education, and strong community partnerships.
As part of this year’s remembrance and awareness efforts, 12 crosses have been placed at the Wise County Courthouse in honor of children from Wise County whose lives were lost due to child abuse. This display serves not only as a memorial, but also as a silent protest against child abuse-standing as a powerful visual reminder of lives lost and the urgent need for continued prevention, accountability, and advocacy.
In addition, the department of is launching a community-wide initiative to “Turn Wise County Blue” during the week of April 20-24. Residents, business, schools and organizations are encouraged to participate by:
· Wearing Blue throughout the week
· Displaying blue pinwheels, the national symbol of child abuse prevention
· Placing a candle with a blue light in a window or using blue outdoor lighting
· Decorating homes, storefronts, and community spaces in blue awareness ribbons
A designated “GO BLUE DAY” will further highlight the community’s unified stand against child abuse and commitment to protecting children.
Every child deserves safety, stability, and the opportunity to grown up in a nurturing environment, “Preventing child abuse requires the commitment of an entire community. By coming together-through awareness, action, and visible support-we can make a lasting difference.”
The Wise County Department of Social Servies encourages all residents to learn the signs of abuse and neglect and to report any concerns. Community awareness and action can help save lives and connect families with support services before cries occur.
