Friends and neighbors of Witt and Irving,

Over the past few months, we’ve been fortunate to welcome some new members to the WFD, and we’re continuing to grow. We’re looking for dedicated community members of all backgrounds and experience levels — young or old, men and women alike.

Not everyone joins to fight fires, and that’s okay. Our department also responds to EMS calls and relies on strong support in areas such as administration, organization, documentation, and community service. Whatever your strengths or interests may be, there’s a place for you here.

We’ve recently added a brand-new training room and are committed to providing the knowledge, guidance, and hands-on training needed to help you succeed in the role that fits you best. No prior experience is necessary — just a willingness to serve your community.

If you’re interested in learning more, please reach out to me or any member of the department, and we’ll be happy to get you an application.

The time commitment is simple: just 7 meetings and 7 training sessions per year for full members

We’d love to have you join the team and make a difference in our community.

At 3:42 a.m. this morning, the Witt Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to a residential structure fire on Monroe Street in Witt.

Command 300 was the first unit to arrive on scene, establishing command and reporting light smoke showing from the structure. Engine 301 arrived shortly after, and firefighters made entry into the residence, locating an attic fire in the living room area. An 1¾-inch handline was deployed to extinguish the fire, and thermal imaging cameras were used to check for extension into other areas of the attic.

Engine 304 and Ladder 307 also arrived on scene, providing additional support for fireground operations. Automatic mutual aid from the Nokomis Fire Protection District assisted on scene, while mutual aid from the Fillmore Fire Protection District was canceled. The RIT team from the Litchfield Fire Department was also canceled while en route.

The Nokomis-Witt Area Ambulance Service provided on-scene medical support. The fire was determined to be electrical in nature, and no injuries were reported.

Prairie Legacy Woodworks with the help of Beeler and Sons (the sons are members of the WFD) completed this head table for the training room and it couldn't have turned out better! Having skilled craftsman on the department continues to pay off and we are blessed to have these guys on our team. Another milestone reached last night was the installation of the radio room desktops. These tops were finished and installed by our members as well. The transformation from the old meeting room into a 4th bay, radio room and PPE wash room, which was not part of the grant, is almost complete.

The WFD had just returned to service at our station following a mutual aid call to Litchfield when the storm moved through the area. Within minutes of the storm arriving, our first call was dispatched at 6:03 PM for power lines down on a vehicle. Shortly after responding to that incident, three additional calls were received for power poles and lines down on Irving Road, a tree on a house, and additional storm-related damage.

Resources were divided to respond to these incidents. While responding throughout the area, crews quickly recognized that there was a significant amount of damage, particularly on the southwest side of Witt. Personnel regrouped at the station and implemented our pre-established storm response maps, which divide the City of Witt into four operational sections. This system allowed crews to conduct damage assessments in a more organized and efficient manner.

The southwest division of town appears to have sustained the most significant damage. While additional damage may still be identified, the initial assessment documented 19 damage reports. These included two sheds completely destroyed, two campers rolled and destroyed, roof damage to multiple structures including the Lions Building, numerous power lines and poles down, and several trees either snapped or uprooted. Additional reports included minor damage such as siding and limb debris.

At this time, no injuries have been reported. Ameren will be working with affected homeowners over the coming days to repair damaged service lines and restore electrical service where needed.

Witt Fire Department was dispatched as part of the commercial fire box alarm to the City of Litchfield to provide station coverage. While en route, WFD units were upgraded to respond directly to the scene. Upon arrival, crews positioned Ladder 307 on the C-side of the structure and established an aerial master stream.

The primary objective for WFD was to provide exposure protection for a residential garage located approximately 10 feet from the bowling alley, while simultaneously maintaining aerial fire suppression operations. (No damage was sustained to the garage)

Due to the significant fire load present, WFD initially had access to only a 2.5" hydrant outlet for water supply. After establishing initial exposure control, WFD requested rural water operations from Command 800. This request resulted in five tankers being deployed to the east side of the structure.

Once the tankers arrived on scene, apparatus were repositioned and a rural tanker shuttle operation was quickly established. With the shuttle in place, WFD was able to maintain an aerial master stream flow of approximately 800 GPM at the tip, along with a 1.75" handline for continued exposure protection.

Raymond community Fire Protection District Pumper/Tanker 502 provided the primary water supply for WFD operations.

WFD responded with the following personnel and apparatus:

Ladder 307 with 6 firefighters
Tanker 302 with 2 firefighters

The Witt Volunteer Fire Department recently upgraded the lighting in our apparatus bays to high-efficiency LED fixtures with motion sensors and timed shutoff.

This project was completed through the Ameren Illinois Energy Efficiency Program, which helps organizations improve lighting while reducing energy use.

The new lighting provides:
• Brighter, clearer visibility for firefighters preparing apparatus and equipment
• Instant lighting when motion is detected during emergency responses
• Reduced energy consumption and operating costs
• Automatic shutoff to prevent lights from being left on

Improvements like this help ensure our firefighters can operate safely while also being responsible stewards of the resources provided by our community.

Thank you for your continued support of the Witt Volunteer Fire Department.

So proud of you Hope!
