The Wixom Police Department is partnering with the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning (OHSP) to participate in Operation Safe Stop. Operation Safe Stop will take place during National School Bus Safety Week, October 19–23, 2026.

Operation Safe Stop (OSS) is a statewide enforcement campaign that is conducted in conjunction with National School Bus Safety Week. Participating police agencies work with their local school districts during the week to provide education and enforcement for their communities. OSS enforcement efforts focus on drivers who ignore the flashing red lights and extended stop-arm of a school bus that is picking up or dropping off students.

Drivers should prepare to stop when they see the overhead flashing yellow lights of a school bus and stop at least 20 feet away from a bus when the overhead lights are flashing red. Drivers who pass stopped school buses may be charged with civil infractions carrying a fine up to $500. Drivers who pass a stopped school bus and cause an injury face a misdemeanor charge and a fine up to $1,000 and/or up to one year in jail. Drivers who pass a stopped school bus and cause a death are subject to a felony with a fine up to $7,500 and/or up to 15 years in jail.

Operation Safe Stop is a collaborative effort between Dean Transportation, the OHSP, and the Michigan Association of Pupil Transportation.

If you see a school bus while driving, please be cautious and obey the law. Let’s keep our students in the community safe!

UPDATE:

The semi truck and trailer have been removed and the road is completely reopened.

At approximately 1:20 PM, a semi-truck traveling from southbound Wixom Rd onto I-96 overturned on the on-ramp to eastbound I-96. The truck was towing a tandem trailer which was not carrying any hazardous material. The accident is being investigated and handled by the Michigan State Police Motor Carrier Division. The driver suffered minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

The on-ramp will remain closed while wrecker crews attempt to remove the vehicle from the roadway. It is anticipated this could cause both NB and SB Wixom Rd to be briefly closed while trucks remove the vehicle. We are asking that the public please avoid the area for the next couple of hours.

Please join us in congratulating our new Deputy Chief Caldwell and Sergeant Evans, who were officially sworn in at the Council Meeting on July 28th, 2026. We also want to congratulate Sergeant Byberg on his new assignment as the Detective Sergeant.
These promotions reflect their dedication, leadership, hard work, and commitment to serving our community. We are proud of their achievements and look forward to the continued positive impact they will have in their new roles.

Due to expected high temperatures, the City of Wixom will open a cooling center. The cooling center is open today, Monday, July 13, 2026, and will remain open through Friday, July 17, 2026, closing at 4:00 p.m. on Friday.

The cooling center is intended to assist residents in staying safe during potentially dangerous heat conditions. Residents in need of a cool environment are encouraged to utilize this facility during the listed hours.
