🌿Breaking the Stigma: Faith & Mental Health in Harmony✨️

For a long time, there has been a heavy silence in the Church regarding mental health. Many have felt that a struggle with anxiety or depression was a sign of "spiritual failure."
But here is the truth:
You can love Jesus and still have a racing heart.
The Good News:
The tide is finally turning. Recent studies show that 68% of Americans would feel welcome in a church even if they had a mental illness. Yet, the gap is still real:

The Struggle:
Over 7 million Christians in the U.S. struggle with clinical depression.

The Gap:
Nearly 1 in 4 adults look to the Church first for help, but many feel their church isn't equipped to help.

The Science of Hope:
Science is finally catching up to Scripture. Research shows that people with active spiritual lives are 22% less likely to experience depressive symptoms.
Faith isn't just a comfort; it is a proven catalyst for recovery.

In our sessions, we use Scripture and biblical disciplines as the foundation for real change, doing our part to lower those numbers and bring hope back to the Church, one transformed life at a time.

A hallmark of my coaching model is the shift toward Identity over Diagnosis.
While clinical diagnoses have their place, they can often become "man-made" identities that feel heavy and limiting.

My approach is strengths-based and solution-focused.
Instead of looking only at the struggle and flaws, we look at the unique gifts, talents and abilities God has already placed within you.
We don't get stuck in the problem; we focus on the solution found in Christ and what He's given you as His unique and deeply loved child.
By leaning into your identity as a *New Creation*, we move forward with practical tools that honor your faith and your future.

This May, let’s choose to break the silence. You don’t have to choose between your faith and your mental well-being.

Are you mourning?

I was reading Acts 8 this morning and verse 2 stood out to me: “Godly men buried Stephen and mourned deeply for him” (NIV).

Lately, I have picked up on the theme of grief and mourning—both personally and professionally. Grief and mourning are probably some of the hardest things we have to face in life.

Thankfully, as believers in Christ, we do not grieve like the rest of mankind who have no hope. (1 Thess. 4:13–14). This passage goes on to say, in verse 18, that we are to “encourage one another with these words.”
We have a hope for heaven through Christ Jesus.
And Jesus is coming for His bride (the church) soon.

We can mourn and grieve, but we do so with a hope we can take comfort in.

Here are some more verses on mourning that speak to both our hearts and our mental and emotional well‑being:

Romans 12:15 — Supportive, empathetic friends
Grief is eased when others sit with us in it; shared sorrow reduces emotional isolation.

Revelation 21:4 — The hope of Heaven
Holding onto future restoration helps anchor us when pain feels overwhelming.

Matthew 5:4 — God comforts the mourning
Comfort is both spiritual and emotional—God meets us where our hearts are tender.

Psalm 30:11–12 — Praise through sadness
Worship can help regulate emotions by grounding us in God’s unchanging character.

Psalm 34:18 — God’s nearness to the brokenhearted
Feeling seen and held by God supports emotional stability in seasons of loss.

Genesis 50:11 — Holding a ceremony
Ceremonies and memorials help the mind process grief and honor what was lost.

Daniel 10:2 & Deut. 34:8 — Taking the time you need
Grief has no deadline; giving yourself time supports healthier emotional recovery.

Jeremiah 31:13 & Ecclesiastes 7:2 — Mourning is not forever
Emotional pain softens over time; joy and laughter slowly return as the heart heals.

Jeremiah 8:18 & 21 — Confessing your feelings to the Lord
Naming emotions reduces internal pressure and intimately invites God into the healing process.

Job 1:20–22 — Mourn and worship together
Honest grief expressed before God builds emotional self‑control and spiritual resilience.

Psalm 6:6 & 9 — Crying it out
Tears release emotional tension, and remembering God hears you brings comfort.

2 Corinthians 5:8–10 — Eternity and accountability
Grief reminds us of our true home and encourages intentional, purposeful living.

Ecclesiastes 7:2 — Life’s fragility
Loss prompts honest reflection about how we’re living and where we’re headed eternally.

Grief is sacred ground, where love, loss, faith, and real emotion all show up at once. As we walk through it, Scripture brings us back to hope, to community, and to the presence of God. My prayer is that we give ourselves and each other grace in the process, letting the Lord shape our hearts as we process whatever type of grief we are facing, seeking to heal from it with God’s help, and to hold onto the hope we have in His Son, Jesus Christ and Heaven that awaits us one day.

If you need help through your grief process, I would be honored to come along side you, to be that support for you in your time of healing. Call or text me at 860-940-0590.

Peace and Blessings,

🤯Emotional Control and the People You Associate With:

📖 In Acts 5:17–42, we see the high priest and the Sadducees persecuting Peter and John after the apostles performed miracles, preached Christ resurrected, and continued adding to the number of believers. These religious leaders were filled with jealousy, fear, confusion, guilt, shame, and deep anger.

They envied the apostles’ ability to perform miracles, but their inability had nothing to do with human effort. The apostles walked in obedience to God, filled with the Holy Spirit, living out their God‑given mission. The religious leaders, however, were merely religious—devoted to man‑made rules and outward appearance while spiritually empty because they did not know Christ or possess the Holy Spirit. That is why they could not do what the apostles did.

They were also jealous of the apostles’ growing influence. These leaders prided themselves on image, authority, and control. The apostles threatened that system. Their message exposed the leaders’ religious structure as obsolete, invalid, and powerless. The apostles were leading people away from hollow tradition and into the Way, the Truth, and the Life—Jesus Christ, the resurrected Messiah—into relationship, new life, and freedom.

The leaders tried everything to stop them, even imprisoning them under guard. But verses 19–20 tell us that an angel of the Lord opened the doors and commanded them to return to the temple and preach “the full message of this new life.” Nothing could stop them because they were obedient, Spirit‑filled, and on mission for God.
This only intensified the leaders’ confusion, fear, and anger. When confronted, Peter boldly reminded them of two truths:
1) They must obey God rather than man
2) The leaders had killed Jesus, but God raised Him from the dead—and the apostles would not stop testifying to what they witnessed.

The leaders were now enraged and wanted the apostles dead. They were fully in fight‑or‑flight mode—thinking brain offline, acting purely from emotion and instinct (v. 33).

😮‍💨 Then enters co‑regulation—through Gamaliel.

Co‑regulation is when a calm, grounded person uses their steady presence to help someone in a heightened emotional state regain stability and clarity. That is exactly what Gamaliel did. A respected teacher of the law (v. 34), he addressed the leaders with composure in the midst of their emotional chaos. His clarity, confidence, and controlled tone brought stability to the room.
He urged them to “consider carefully what you intend to do” (v. 35), inviting them to pause before acting on impulse.

In fight‑or‑flight, the brain prioritizes speed over accuracy. Tunnel vision sets in, making long‑term consequences nearly invisible. In this case, their impulsivity could have led to murdering Peter and John—and ultimately fighting against God Himself (vv. 33, 39).

Gamaliel’s calm intervention helped them become partially regulated, just enough for their prefrontal cortex to come back online so they could think more clearly. That pause opened the door for the rest of his reasoning.

He reminded them that other self‑made movements had risen and fallen because they were from human efforts. But if the apostles were truly sent by God, nothing could stop them and opposing them would mean opposing God, with serious consequences.

Gamaliel’s argument was persuasive because he engaged them with respect, steadiness, and emotional control.

The thought of fighting against God persuaded them. They released the apostles, but not without one last jab of pride and anger: they flogged them and issued another threat.
Yet the apostles left rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer for Christ, and they continued preaching daily.

Let's compare the groups around them:

* The religious leaders surrounded themselves with people who were power‑hungry, egotistical, hypocritical, and self‑serving. They were committed to personal gain.

* The apostles were surrounded by believers who were of one accord, sharing everything, meeting needs, strengthening one another, and living for Christ out of love and gratitude (Acts 4). They were committed to Christ and one another.

Reflection:
Who you associate with deeply influences how you face challenges and how you handle strong emotions.

- Are you surrounded by people who fuel jealousy, anger, fear, and confusion - or by people who encourage you, pray for you, and strengthen your faith?

- Who is your Gamaliel—the person who helps you calm down when you’re dysregulated, yet still speaks truth without compromise?

If you need support learning emotional regulation and helpful coping strategies, please reach out to see how Christian mental health coaching can help support you.

🪨 When Obedience Feels Heavy
In Exodus 17, Moses was leading a weary, grumbling people when the Amalekites suddenly attacked. Moses obeyed God’s call to lead, but the battle was long. When his arms grew tired, the Israelites began to lose.
That’s when Aaron and Hur stepped in. They placed a stone under Moses and held his hands up—one on each side—until sunset. Their support made the victory possible.
The takeaway?
Obedience to God isn't always easy. It requires stamina, sacrifice, and—most importantly—godly community.
Even Moses, a giant of the faith, couldn't hold his hands up alone.
Are you in a "heavy" season?
You might be fighting a spiritual battle or being lead through a desert, or you might be trying to simply live in obedience to what God has called you to, but are feeling worn down (its not an easy task!)
We weren’t meant to carry the weight of obedience in isolation.
We need friends who will see the miracles and trust in God - not those who refuse to see them and choose grumbling over praising and thanksgiving.
We need "Aaron and Hur" friends—those who will hold our arms up in prayer and faith until the victory comes.

Reflect today:
Are you surrounded by people who lift your hands to God, or those who join in the grumbling?

Are you being the kind of friend who helps carry someone else’s burden (Gal 6:2)?

Don't try to fight the battle alone. Find your people, and keep your eyes on the Lord.

Peace & Blessings,
Carolyn Vargas M.A., CLC, PMHC

I recently received a diploma for youth mental health coaching from the AACC, Light University. Today, I received the official credentials!
I am now officially a BOARD CERTIFED Mental Health Coach!

This is more than a credential for me, it’s a testimony of God’s faithfulness and a reflection of the standard I hold for the people I serve.

What sets me apart as a coach is simple: I am a lifelong learner who refuses to offer anything I’m not willing to live out myself. I set goals, take intentional action, and stay grounded in the “why” behind my work. I seek the Lord for wisdom, strength, and direction, and then I do the work, even when the path is slow, bumpy, or has unexpected detours.

This certification feels different because it reminds me of a beautiful truth: it doesn’t matter what others say, if God wills it, He will make it happen! It also feels like a smile from my Heavenly Father, reminding me that I am walking in the very work He has called me to. That assurance gives me a great sense of fulfillment, gratitude, and joy as I continue serving others with excellence and purpose.

My coaching is built on that foundation of faith, perseverance, and excellence. I am committed to providing high‑quality, Christ‑centered support that empowers my clients to grow, heal, and walk confidently in the purpose God has for them.

To my former and current clients: Thank you for entrusting me with your care. It is truly an honor to be part of your journey.

To my future clients: I can't wait to meet you and see what God has for your life!
