Afternoon Wolf Point. Some of you may have noticed we had a monumental fire a little while ago that was over before we knew it.
It started off with containment and utility issues. We we very aware of those less fortunate staying inside of the old office building attached to the south side of the elevator. We took it upon ourselves to do a quick search near the entrance and east side of the office and found no clue of anyone.
After that we went to containment with extinguishment put on the back burner. The capability of a fire this size and nature can be extensive with the pathways laid out and materials we are dealing with. We had a single chimney that was fueled incredibly fast with the wind from Mother Nature and an old fuel type that is/was extremely flammable. These elevators can be a hazardous in many different ways and demand respect when it comes to dealing with them.
The first initial thought was to close down front street and contact utility companies and get power shut down as well as identify the location of any gas lines. My first thought was to leave power on until we know for sure where this building is going to fall. I had good intentions with that decision simply because if you look down front street, you will notice how crucial these power lines are, especially with the high school at the end. Not only the high school in mind but the sub station at the east end of front street, what else could be tied to these power lines? With our freezing temperatures lately, turning off heaters and vital power to many was a risk I took.
Luckily the elevator noticed our worry and fell mostly into itself and to the south barely leaving its own foundation. The pile of coals from the old 2x4’s and what not will smolder for quite some time. Please be patient with us as we proceed with a plan to take care of the issue.
Thank you for supporting us Wolf Point, we only do this for you.
Also thanks to Charlie Redfield for setting us up for supper and supplies from The Sherman Inn. We appreciate it all!
Huge thanks goes out to our other first responders as well! All law enforcement, EMS, utility entities, State MDT, County DES officials, as well as city of wolf point officials! I’m sure I can go on for hours thanking people involved so please tag the folks in the comments and or tell them we greatly appreciate them all.
