Mission Statement of the Union County Police Chiefs Association
The purposes for which this Association is organized are to secure a closer official and personal relationship among police officials throughout Union County, and to secure unity of action in police matters and elevate the standards of police institutions; to further the adoption of humane efforts in the enforcement of laws, the advan

cement along all lines pertaining to the prevention and detection of crime, and the promotion of police and education in general. To promote and encourage mutual cooperation, discussion and interest in the problems of law enforcement. To promote a forum for the exchange of ideas, to conduct and promote seminars, conferences and research into enforcement and educational methods. To raise monies; to acquire funds to spend the monies of the Association in a manner authorized by law to accomplish the aforementioned goals.

Congratulations to Retired Chief Anthony Buccelli Jr. from the New Providence Police and New Providence Office of Emergency Management on receiving life membership in the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police today after being a member of the Association for 20 years.

Anthony D. Buccelli, Jr. was appointed as the sixth chief of police on January 4, 2006. Under Chief Buccelli, the police department achieved its initial accreditation from the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police and recognition from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement in March 2006.

UCPCA OFFICER MEMORIAL: MAY 2026

This month, the UCPCA recognizes Detective Matthew Tarentino of the Summit Police Department, whose EOW was May 30th, 2017.

Detective Matthew Tarentino was killed in a vehicle crash while en route to make a presentation at a local church.

Another vehicle crossed the median and struck his patrol car head-on on I-78, near Liberty Corner Road.

Detective Tarentino had served in law enforcement for 6-1/2 years. He had previously served with the South Bound Brook Police Department and Rutgers University Police Department. He was survived by his expectant wife and two sons. His daughter was born after his death.
