When our firefighters aren’t responding to emergencies, they’re training for them. 🧗‍♂️

Our crews regularly practice technical rope rescue to maintain and build the skills needed to respond to emergencies across Marin County, from steep roadways and remote trails to areas along the water. As fire season winds down, we continue investing in our seasonal firefighters through hands-on training that builds practical skills, experience and confidence they can carry forward in their fire service careers.

Cuando nuestros bomberos no están atendiendo emergencias, se están preparando para ellas. 🧗‍♂️

Nuestros equipos practican constantemente técnicas de rescate con cuerdas para mantener y desarrollar las habilidades necesarias para responder a emergencias en todo el condado de Marin, desde carreteras y rutas remotas hasta zonas junto al agua. Giving the gift of reading! 📚
 
Building strong relationships with our community starts long before an emergency. Sometimes, it looks like our administrative team organizing a book drive to give local children greater access to books and opportunities to learn️. 
 
Our recent department-wide book drive collected over 170 books! 📖 These books will be donated to the Book Exchange of Marin, a volunteer-run organization dedicated to promoting literacy and putting books into the hands of children throughout Marin.
 
We’re thankful for this organizations’ efforts in making a meaningful difference for local children and families. We take pride in being part of this community, and we know that looking out for one another and finding ways to connect are what make Marin stronger, in everyday moments and when challenges arise. ❤️

Para construir relaciones sólidas con nuestra comunidad hay que empezar mucho antes de que surja una emergencia. Por ejemplo, cuando nuestro equipo administrativo organiza una colecta de libros para que los niños y niñas locales tengan mejor acceso a los libros y más oportunidades de aprender️.
 
Gracias a nuestra reciente colecta de libros en todo el departamento, ¡recaudamos más de 170 libros! 📖 Estos libros se donarán a Book Exchange of Marin, una organización dirigida por voluntarios dedicada a promover la lucha contra el analfabetismo y a poner libros en manos de los niños de todo Marin.
 
Agradecemos los esfuerzos de esta organización por marcar una diferencia significativa para los niños y las familias locales. Today (October 20), Marin County Fire Department, in coordination with Marin Water, is conducting a prescribed fire operation on Mt. Tam Watershed lands in the Lagunitas Meadow and Pine Point area near the Bon Tempe Reservoir along Alex Forman Trail and Pumpkin Ridge Trail.

You may see or smell smoke in or near Mt. Tam. Please heed all closure signs and refrain from dialing 9-1-1 to report smoke in this area.

During the burn operation, the Alex Foreman Trail through the interior of Pine Point, Pumpkin Ridge Trail between Fish Grade and Redwood Turn, and Pine Point Trail will be closed. Sky Oaks Road will remain open but may be subject to short delays due to smoke and temporary lane closures as fire engines patrol the adjacent burn perimeter.

In an emergency, every second counts. 

Marin County Regional Fire Academy recruits spent the week building hands-on skills in fire attack, water supply, rope rescue and ladder operations. They practiced fire attack using hose lines, supplying water from hydrants, learning essential rope and knot techniques, and raising 24-foot extension ladders and 14-foot roof ladders.
Recruits are also practicing putting on their self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) each morning before physical training. Team challenges put those skills to the test, combining SCBA donning, ladder raises and knot tying in timed relays that reinforce what they’ve learned.

Physical training included two 3.8-mile runs to Deer Island, CrossFit-style workouts and yoga. Recruits also participated in emergency medical training, including cardiac arrest and heart attack simulations and advanced airway techniques.

Each day builds on the last, helping recruits develop the technical skills, physical readiness and teamwork needed to serve their communities.

As early as Monday, Oct. 19, the Marin County Fire Department, in coordination with Marin Water, may implement a prescribed burn on the Mt. Tam Watershed. The burn is planned for the Lagunitas Meadow and Pine Point area near the Bon Tempe Reservoir along Alex Forman Trail and Pumpkin Ridge Trail and may cover up to 25 acres.

We ask the community to please refrain from dialing 9-1-1 to report smoke in this area. The operation may continue for additional days, if needed, to complete work in the planned areas.

This date is tentative as all burn operations are dependent on favorable weather, fuel conditions and air quality. As a result of the operation, residents may see or smell smoke. As with other vegetation management approaches, such as goat grazing and hand crews, prescribed fire creates critical fuel breaks that can reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfire and leave less dense, more resilient woodlands behind. The Marin County Regional Fire Academy kicked off last week, with recruits completing their first week of an 11-week training program.

The academy brings together recruits from:
• Marin County Fire Department
• Southern Marin Fire District
• Novato Fire Protection District
• Stinson Beach Fire Department

The first week focused on introductions, rules and expectations, building camaraderie, and learning to properly wear and work in personal protective equipment (PPE). Recruits also began learning the importance of attention to detail and maintaining high standards in every aspect of the job.

The three-month program includes hands-on training, classroom lectures, and EMS instruction on Fridays.

La Academia Regional de Bomberos del Condado de Marin comenzó la semana pasada, y los reclutas completaron su primera semana del programa de capacitación de 11 semanas.

La academia reúne a reclutas de:
• Marin County Fire Department
• Southern Marin Fire District
• Novato Fire Protection District
• Stinson Beach Fire Department

La primera semana se dedicó a conocer a los compañeros, las reglas y las expectativas, a fomentar el espíritu compañerismo, y a aprender a usar correctamente el equipo de protección personal (EPP). Los reclutas también comenzaron a aprender la importancia de prestar atención a los detalles y de mantener estándares altos en todos los aspectos del trabajo.

El programa de tres meses incluye capacitación práctica, clases teóricas y capacitación en servicios médicos de emergencia (EMS) los Viernes.
