A Tribute To Courage

On May 16th the WTHPC took part in the dedication and "unveiling" of the beautiful new mural at the site of the horrific train disaster know as The Wreck of the Broke, along with the Mayor of Woodbridge and other dignitaries. The mural is a somber memorial to all the people who lost their lives that day and to the courage of the people who helped save many others.

Memorial Event For The Wreck Of The Broker
Although its been done annually for many years, this year’s memorial event took on special
significance. February 6, 2026 was the Seventy-Fifth Anniversary of this tragic train accident in
Woodbridge,NJ which took the lives of eighty-four commuters and one railroader on February 6,1951.
At 1030am, The Historical Association of Woodbridge Township and The Woodbridge Township
Historical Preservation Commission placed a wreath at the location of the accident at the existing
commemorative plaque at the corner of Legion Place and Fulton Streets.
The event is dedicated to and was attended by local residents and emergency response groups who
turned out in huge numbers to assist and comfort the victims of the accident.
During the month of February, the Woodbridge History Museum has a new exhibit relating to The
Broker. The museum is located at 86 Green Street in Woodbridge and is open Sundays from 1-4pm.
In addition, author and historian Gordon Bond is presenting “Mud,Blood, and Sandwiches” focusing on
the response by emergency responders and local residents to the accident. This event will be held at the
society’s monthly meeting on February 23 at 7pm at the Fellowship Hall of the First Presbyterian
Church at 600 Rahway Ave in Woodbridge. You don’t have to be a member to attend, so please come!
So while the years go by and first hand memories of “The Broker” accident fade, Woodbridge
Township continues to keep their memory alive.
