🚔🍦 KNOW THE LAW: TRISTAN'S LAW 🍦🚔

As summer arrives and ice cream trucks return to our neighborhoods, the Woodbridge Police Department reminds all motorists to be aware of Connecticut's "Tristan's Law," enacted to help protect children around ice cream trucks.

Named in memory of 10-year-old Tristan Barhorst of Wallingford, this law was created to improve safety and prevent tragedies involving children crossing the street to purchase ice cream.

⚠️ When approaching or overtaking an ice cream truck that is displaying flashing red lights and has its stop signal arm and front crossing arm extended, drivers MUST:

✅ Stop at least 10 feet from the front or rear of the truck.
✅ Proceed only after stopping and only when safe to do so.
✅ Travel no faster than 5 MPH while passing.
✅ Yield the right-of-way to any pedestrian crossing to or from the truck.

❗ Exception: Drivers are not required to stop if the ice cream truck is on the opposite side of a roadway separated by a physical barrier or safety island.

Children can be unpredictable and may suddenly enter the roadway. Slow down, stay alert, and use extra caution whenever you see an ice cream truck in your neighborhood.

Together, we can help keep our roads safe and ensure every child enjoys a safe summer.

🚔WOODBRIDGE POLICE DEPARTMENT PSA 🚔

The Woodbridge Police Department is reminding residents to help prevent vehicle thefts and thefts from motor vehicles by taking a few simple precautions.

Unfortunately, criminals often target vehicles that are left unlocked or have keys, or other valuables left inside. In many cases, these crimes are crimes of opportunity.

🔒 Protect yourself by following these tips:
● Always lock your vehicle, even when parked in your driveway.
● Never leave keys or key fobs inside your vehicle.
● Remove valuables from plain sight or take them inside.
● Close all windows and sunroofs when leaving your vehicle unattended.
● Park in well-lit areas whenever possible.
● Consider installing security cameras or motion-activated lighting around your home.
● Report any suspicious activity to police immediately.

Remember: "Lock It, Take It, Hide It."
A few seconds of prevention can save you from becoming a victim.

If you observe suspicious persons checking vehicle door handles or acting suspiciously in your neighborhood, contact the Woodbridge Police Department right away.

Stay vigilant and help keep our community safe.

Chief Smith and Deputy Chief Quinn had the honor of attending the Special Olympics Summer Games this past weekend along with other law enforcement personnel from across the state. Chief Smith had privilege of presenting medals to some truly inspiring athletes.

More than just a ceremony, it was an opportunity to witness firsthand the determination, perseverance, and sportsmanship that define the Special Olympics. Each athlete's journey, effort, and achievement served as a powerful reminder of what can be accomplished through hard work and dedication.

It was humbling to celebrate these remarkable competitors and share in their moments of triumph. Congratulations to all of the athletes who competed this weekend —you are an inspiration to our community and beyond.

The torch run is running about 20 min. Behind schedule!!!

*** TRAFFIC ALERT ***
This afternoon, members of the Woodbridge Police Department will be participating in the annual Connecticut Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics .

WPD will receive the Torch on Ansonia Rd at the Town line around 3:43pm. They will carry it to Beecher Rd (4:03 pm), make a left turn down Beecher Rd to Center Rd (4:20pm). From Center Rd, they will carry the Flame of Hope to Amity Rd and make their way to the New Haven Town line (4:43pm) where they will hand it off to New Have Police Department.

We anticipate there will be traffic issues as a result. We ask everyone to be patient as the Special Olympics Flame of Hope passes through town and seek alternatives routes if necessary.

Should you encounter them along the route be sure to cheer them on but remember DO NOT cut between the lead police vehicle and support vehicles at the rear even if there is a gap.

While we encourage people to come out and cheer on the officers and guest runners, we ask that you legally park in a lot along the route and be respectful of the property where you cheer from.
