This week, Woodbridge PBA Local 38 members recommenced the Woodbridge Junior Police Academy after a one-year hiatus caused by the COVID 19 pandemic. Fifty township-area middle school students participated in the rigorous program designed to introduce young men and women to the law enforcement profession.

The students overcame many physical, mental, and emotional challenges as the academy instilled core values of discipline, teamwork, and perseverance that are central to police work. A huge thank you to the PBA members involved in this program!

Due to many small local businesses being closed for the past year, raising money for this year’s 9th Annual Emergency Services Cup was a difficult task. Woodbridge PBA Local #38 and the Woodbridge Fire/EMS were able to come together and raise over $5,000! This year’s donation will benefit the Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance and a check for $5,000 will be made in honor of Lorraine Petrovey, mother of Woodbridge Police Officer, William Petrovey. We thank everyone that was able to come out and support this great event and look forward to next year!

Attention Woodbridge Residents and Military Veterans, this affects you and your community! Woodbridge PBA Local #38 needs your help!

Woodbridge Township is attempting to QUIETLY pass a resolution that would allow the Township to hire police candidates, BYPASSING the Civil Service entry exam, which has been the standard of hire for decades.

Historically, qualified Veterans receive what is called “Veteran’s Preference” which allows certain veterans, including disabled veterans to achieve a higher position on the Civil Service list when it gets certified. The purpose of this is to assist the men and women who served our county in a “QUALIFIED WAR AREA” to come home and continue to serve their community.

In layman’s terms, the resolution means the township can pick someone they want and give them a police job, exempting them from the civil service list. We can’t begin to explain the negative implications this could have on the Police Department moving forward. Imagine serving your county, or obtaining your degree, only to have the Township you want to serve shut down your aspirations by hiring someone that didn't go through the same process.

This can affect you, a friend, relative, from having a FAIR OPPORTUNITY at becoming a Woodbridge Police Officer. This also affects township residents who are non-Veterans that have fairly passed the entry exam and are awaiting the hiring process.

We ask that you call or contact your township council members and urge them to VOTE NO. This resolution is to be voted on this Tuesday, April 6th at the Town Council meeting. Please visit the Woodbridge Township website for current council members.

Thank you and Happy Easter!

Old Bridge Township Police Department

It is with deepest sadness that we inform you of the passing of Officer Chris Cronin, who died suddenly at his home on December 2nd.

Chris was born and raised in Old Bridge. He attended St. Thomas Grammar School and Madison Central High School. He studied at Nova Southeastern University in Florida. Chris followed in the footsteps of his father, retired Old Bridge Police Department Captain Dennis Cronin, joining the OBPD in 2000. Shortly thereafter, they were joined by his brother, Detective Mike Cronin.

Chris proudly served and protected the residents of Old Bridge Township for 21 years. He enjoyed being a part of the community he grew up in and serving those in need.

In addition to his father and brother, Chris leaves behind his wife. Chris was well liked by everyone that knew him and met him. He was a good friend and a dedicated officer. He will be deeply missed.
