June 5, 2026 marks a remarkable milestone — 196 years of service — for Friendship Fire Company No. 1 in the City of Woodbury.

Fire protection in Woodbury dates back even further. The Woodbury Fire Company was originally formed on April 13, 1799. Later, on December 25, 1826, the Woodbury Fire Association was officially incorporated.

As participation declined over time, the organization was revitalized when Friendship Fire Company was reorganized on June 5, 1830 — the date we proudly celebrate today.

The company continued to grow and was formally incorporated in 1883, solidifying its place in the community.

When tracing its roots back to 1799, Woodbury has provided some form of organized fire protection for 226 years, making it one of the oldest fire services in the nation — following closely behind Benjamin Franklin’s Union Fire Company (1736) in Philadelphia and Haddon Fire Company No. 1 (1764).

We proudly congratulate all past and present members on this incredible achievement and extend our sincere thanks to the City of Woodbury for its continued support.

The Friendship Fire Company No. 1 extends its deepest sympathy to the Billingsport Fire Association, the Paulsboro Fire Department, and the Roemmich family on the passing of Chief Archie Roemmich.

Chief Roemmich was a true icon of the fire service, dedicating 65 years to protecting his community and serving others with honor, commitment, and pride. His legacy and impact will never be forgotten.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of serving alongside him. 🕊️🚒

🎉 On This Day in History – January 13, 1887 🚒🔥

Today we proudly celebrate the anniversary of Goodwill Fire Company No. 2, organized on January 13, 1887, in response to the growing population of the City of Woodbury and the need for increased fire protection for the North End of the city.

Officially instituted on April 22, 1887, and incorporated in February of 1891, Goodwill Fire Company faithfully served the community for nearly 119 years. From its original firehouse at 637 N. Broad Street, to the later station built across the street at 640 N. Broad Street in 1922, Goodwill stood as a cornerstone of public safety and service.

In February of 1937, Goodwill also made history by hosting the first sessions of the Gloucester County Fire Academy, leaving a lasting impact on fire service education throughout the county.

Though the company officially closed on July 26, 2006, its legacy lives on. Today, the City of Woodbury continues to be protected by a dedicated duty crew staffed 24/7/365, safeguarding the city’s 2.1 square miles and honoring the foundation laid by those who served before them.

We remember, honor, and celebrate the generations of firefighters who answered the call at Goodwill Fire Company No. 2. Once a Goodwill firefighter, always a Goodwill firefighter. ❤️🚒
