Woodbury Volunteer Fire Department

Woodbury Volunteer Fire Department Our mission is to deliver the highest degree of protection and safety to our community as possible. Neighbors Helping Neighbors.

The Woodbury Volunteer Fire Department was officially recognized on June 7, 1928. Prior to this date there were two fire department's, each providing fire protection in their "district". The Orenaug Fire Department covered the Main Street area while the Hotchkissville Fire Department covered the village of Hotchkissville. In 1927 the idea was brought forward that the two department's merge into on

e and form the town's fire department. A committee of three firefighters from each department met and worked out the ground work. In mid 1928 both the departments took a vote and the Woodbury Volunteer Fire Department was formed.

Haden Ware: World Traveler, Entrepreneur, and Hometown Volunteer

Meet Haden, one of our newest volunteers, who joined the department in 2023 and is quite possibly the most well-traveled member of the station.

Born right here in Washington, Connecticut, Haden grew up on The Gunnery campus, where his father served as Dean of Students. At age 11, his mother moved the family to California, a decision that proved fortuitous for a young athlete who would go on to row crew at UC Berkeley and help win a Pac-10 Championship.

Then came 1996. While most people were still trying to figure out what the internet was, Haden made a bold move: he left college to launch one of the early dot-com companies, based not in Silicon Valley, but in Antigua. That venture marked the beginning of a remarkable two-decade journey building internet businesses across Ireland, Germany, Montenegro, and Argentina.

In 2021, Haden returned home to Connecticut. He now lives in Woodbury with his wife, Nicole, and their four dogs. He continues to work in ecommerce, leading marketing and development for Nicole's company, Fix Your Period, an app dedicated to helping women address menstrual and hormonal health challenges. These days, he's affectionately known as the "Period Guy," a title he embraces with good humor.

Haden joined the department in 2023, bringing with him a lifetime of experiences from around the world. Reflecting on his journey and his return home, he often shares a quote that perfectly captures his story:

"As the saying goes, 'A man travels the world over in search of what he needs, and returns home to find it.' That's me. Coming home is where I finally found what I'd been searching for, and the fire department has been a big part of that."

Welcome home, Haden. We're glad you're here.

Note: Haden is also one of our features firefighters in our upcoming promotional videos.....stay tuned for it's premier, coming soon.

Firefighter Friday: Meet the Brave Faces Behind the Helmets! (Aug 28 repost)

Meet Steve: Hometown Volunteer Firefighter

Steve Anctil joined the department in 2024 and wasted no time getting involved. He jumped in with both feet, completing Firefighter I and II certification during his very first year with the department. Thanks to his impressive height and willingness to tackle any challenge, he's affectionately known around the station as the department's "aerial ladder."

Steve is a hardworking and dependable individual who takes great pride in everything he does and in the people he cares about, including the community he proudly serves as a volunteer firefighter. Professionally, he works as a Lead Maintenance Technician in Connecticut, where he has built a career centered on solving problems, helping others, and getting the job done right.

When he's not at work or serving with the department, Steve enjoys working with his hands, learning new skills, spending time outdoors, and making memories with the people he loves. He values loyalty, honesty, and treating others with respect, and he strives to make the most of every day.

We thank Firefighter Steve for his service to our country, his dedication to our community, and his continued commitment to helping his neighbors whenever they're in need. We are proud to have him on our team and grateful for the positive impact he makes both on and off the fireground.

Please join us in thanking Steve for his service and dedication!
