The Gloucester County Sheriff’s K-9 Unit is currently staffed by five K-9 Handlers with Eight Canines.
2-Dual Purpose Patrol and Explosive dogs (K-9 Nomad, K-9 Jax)
1-Single Purpose Arson dog (K-9 Roxy)
3- Single Purpose Explosive dogs (K-9 Brady, K-9 Missy, K-9 Kane)
2-Bloodhounds for Search and Recovery (K-9 Charlie, K-9 Delta)
We are also pending the acquisition of a Single Purpose Narcotics K
-9 that will replace K-9 Roxie. K-9 Roxie (a narcotics dog) had to be euthanized on December 29th 2014 after suffering from a severe medical emergency. These teams, along with their normal duties are an important part of several regional task forces including the NJSP Detect and Render Safe Task Force, The Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Child Abduction Reaction Team, and the GCSD Project Lifesaver Unit. The GCSD K-9 Unit routinely responds to calls for assistance from the local municipalities along with state and federal agencies. The Unit also conducts numerous public demonstrations around the County. The GCSD K-9 Unit, along with providing K-9 Support to the citizens of Gloucester County, also handles serving Civil Process, Civil Warrants, Levies, Summonses, and Restraining Orders. Evictions are also conducted by the K-9 Unit. The K-9 Unit’s Explosive Detection teams sweep all key County Buildings prior to opening on a daily basis. The Explosive Detection K-9 Teams also played a large role in the safety of the Ms. America pageant held in Atlantic City and were tasked with supporting the Super Bowl at the Meadowlands in February 2014. The Narcotic and Arson teams have helped numerous agencies conduct investigations which ended in arrests. These teams are relied upon by the Fire Marshall’s Office and Prosecutor’s Office to assist with their investigations which net numerous arrests. The GCSD K-9 Unit stands ready to assist any agency that is in need of K-9 support.
