Short Mountain Volunteer Fire Department

Short Mountain Volunteer Fire Department Short Mountain Volunteer Fire Department is a non-profit organization and is one out of seven stations in Cannon County.

In 1994 the history began for the Short Mountain Volunteer Fire Department. The fire department was established with the donation of land by Gerry Nokes, and the help of our Board of Directors going door to door to raise enough funds to build a fire hall. Our Board of Directors raised $10,000 which was enough funds to build the Short Mountain Volunteer Fire Department. The community responded well

and with this and the help of a state grant made it possible to build a fire hall and purchase a 1976 FMC, 1000 gallon pumper / tanker truck and firefighting equipment. With the help of our community and fundraising we have been able to purchase a 1986 4x4 Ford F-350, 250 gallon brush / first responder truck, and add an additional bay to the fire hall along with life saving equipment. We really appreciate all the support from our community, businesses and other organizations for helping us accomplish these tasks. Since then the fire department has been able to raise funds to purchase a 1973 Chevy C-60, 750 gallon high pressure pumper / tanker and build an additional bay to house the brush / first responder truck, thus far giving the fire department three bays. CURRENT HISTORY
In 2009, the fire department was able to purchase a 1978 Ford 900 Series, 2500 gallon pumper / tanker truck from the Suamico Village Fire Department which is just outside of Green Bay, Wisconsin. The tanker was purchased for $500 and only had 28,000 miles on it. Along with the purchase of the tanker, the fire department is in the beginning stages of building another addition that will be 30’ x 40’ two bay building with an enclosed breezeway, to house the tanker and brush truck. Construction on the new addition began in the last part of July 2009 and was completed in early August 2009. We are now working on getting it wired and putting on the finishing touches. FUNDRAISER INFORMATION
The Short Mountain Volunteer Fire Department operates from donations and fundraisers. The department has a ham breakfast in March and November each year and assists DTC with parking in Alexandria for the yearly elections. We also brought back the haunted woods in October 2010. WE WOULD LIKE TO GIVE A SPECIAL THANKS TO:
The community for their past support and their future support for helping making all this possible. Huff & Puff Trucking of Cannon County, for donating the fuel, driver and equipment for the transportation of our tanker to Cannon County. General Equipment of Warren County, for allowing us to use their loading dock to unload the tanker. James Hayes of Cannon County, for volunteering his time and equipment in preparation for beginning ground works of the new addition. Two anonymous members of SMVFD, for donating the stickers for the tanker. We are thankful and proud to serve the Short Mountain Community. Without the help and support of the community and our members, this department wouldn’t be what it is today. We look forward to better serving our great community.

Cannon County EMS is strengthening its emergency response capabilities in the communities!

Over the past two months, Cannon County EMS proudly hosted and instructed an Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) Course at the Adams Memorial Library. This comprehensive program provided participants with extensive pre-hospital emergency medical training, equipping them with the knowledge and skills necessary to pursue certification through the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) as well as the State of Tennessee Department of Health Division of EMS.
This course represented many hours of hands-on and classroom instruction, preparing a new group of responders to serve their community in their critical moments of need.

In addition to training, Cannon County EMS secured a grant through the Tennessee Department of Health to enhance emergency preparedness across the county. These funds were used to purchase new emergency response equipment to outfit both newly trained and current EMRs serving in volunteer departments. The upgraded gear includes new Zoll AEDs and fully stocked medical response bags equipped with oxygen.

These EMRs serve as vital members of the Cannon County Fire Department, Auburntown Fire Department, Woodbury Fire Dept, and the Cannon County Rescue Squad. Their response plays a crucial role in improving response times—especially in rural areas of Cannon County where EMS units may face longer travel distances.

With the addition of highly trained responders and modern lifesaving equipment, Cannon County is better prepared than ever. These advancements ensure that both residents and visitors can receive rapid, effective care when emergencies arise, ultimately strengthening the safety and well-being of the entire community.
