The farm was established in 1940 on 69 acres of land, which was down sized sometime in the nineties into four separate parcels. We purchased the homestead place in 2004, which was 14 acres of completely run down and almost falling to pieces. It consists of 6 acres of pasture land; 1 acre with the homestead on it and the remaining 7 acres is wooded. The house was all on one floor and easily accessi
ble which is exactly what we needed. After buying and moving in, we decided to look for something to do with all this land. One by one we eliminated each animal as we investigated our options. Then in late 2005 we were watching TV and saw an ad on Alpacas that really caught our eye. So to the internet we went. The more we looked the more interested we became. After investigated the cost and improvements need on the farm for the Alpacas, we decided that with small steps we could achieve our dream. In May of 2006 we bought our first 3 females and 3 male. We had to get things rolling fast. We patched walls in the barn and put on a new roof; took a side off 1of our buildings to make a 3 side out of it with a new roof, while installing fencing to make paddocks for the females and males, and planted seed for orchard grass. We worked evenings during the week and weekends to get things ready. To our own amazement the farm is come together rather nicely. We have a three sided walk-in and a beautiful barn with 4 stalls. We still have a lot more to do but we have made it this far and know we can do the rest. South River Farm now exists and is running. We are very proud of our farm and of how far we have come.
