🛴 E-BIKE & E-SCOOTER SAFETY UPDATE 🚲

During the month of August, Woodhaven Police officers had several contacts with e/bike and e-scooter riders throughout our community.

Our approach has been simple: education, safety, and partnership.

Officers stopped and spoke with riders who needed some guidance on the rules of the road and safe riding practices. We also made a point of stopping and thanking riders who were doing things the right way! In a few instances, officers also spoke with parents when younger riders were observed operating e-bikes or e-scooters in an unsafe or improper manner.

No citations were issued during these contacts. Our focus was on providing information, answering questions, and helping riders and parents better understand their responsibilities.

The Woodhaven Police Department wants everyone to be able to enjoy e-bikes and e-scooters safely. As their popularity continues to grow, so does the importance of making sure riders understand the rules and recognize that they share our roads, sidewalks, and neighborhoods with motorists, pedestrians, and other cyclists.

We are asking parents to take a few minutes to talk with their children about safe and responsible riding, and we encourage all riders to familiarize themselves with the rules before heading out.

Safety is a shared responsibility. By working together as a community, we can help prevent injuries and make sure everyone can safely enjoy our beautiful city.

We received a few calls from concerned citizens regarding emergency sirens going off in the area. Those sirens were not Woodhaven’s.

The Fermi 2 Power Plant emergency warning sirens cover a 10-mile radius around the plant in Monroe and Wayne counties and are tested on the last Wednesday of each month at 10:00 a.m.

REMEMBERING DOLLY PARTON 🕊️

The Woodhaven Police Department joins millions around the world in mourning the passing of legendary singer, songwriter, actress and humanitarian Dolly Parton.

Dolly’s remarkable legacy reaches far beyond country music. She brought generations of families together through Dollywood, her beloved theme park in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee, while her many charitable efforts supported children’s literacy, education, healthcare, disaster relief and families in need.

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library helped place hundreds of millions of free books into the hands of children around the world, encouraging them to read, dream big and believe in themselves.

Her music made her an icon, but her kindness, generosity and compassion made her truly unforgettable.

Rest in peace, Dolly Parton. Thank you for the music, the memories and a lifetime devoted to making the world a brighter place. 💙

We are so proud of all our young Safety Town graduates who spent the past two weeks learning how to stay safe at home, on the road, and in our community. These kids worked hard and had a blast along the way.

We hope they take these valuable lessons with them as they head into the school year.

Yesterday, the Woodhaven Police Department had the honor of grilling for the Woodhaven Marching Band’s annual picnic. It was a pleasure to spend time with such a dedicated group of students, families, and volunteers who work so hard to make the marching band a success.

A special thank you to Deputy Chief Ruffner, and SRO Villarreal for helping cook and serve food for everyone in attendance.

Thank you to the Woodhaven Marching Band for allowing us to be a part of this great tradition. We appreciate the opportunity to support our community and wish everyone a fantastic marching season!

🛴 Electric Scooter Safety & Michigan Law Reminder

As electric scooters become increasingly popular, they are also becoming a growing concern in communities across Michigan. The Woodhaven Police Department would like to remind riders—and especially parents—to be mindful of the responsibilities and potential liabilities associated with operating electric scooters.

With more scooters on our streets and sidewalks, it’s important for everyone to understand Michigan law and ride safely.

✅ Know Before You Ride

• Scooters are generally permitted on roads with speed limits under 45 MPH (except when crossing higher-speed roads).

• Ride as close to the right side of the roadway as practicable.

• No more than two riders abreast, and do not weave between lanes of traffic.

• Only one person may ride a scooter at a time.

• Riders must obey all traffic laws, including traffic signals, stop signs, and yielding to pedestrians.

👦 Age & Helmet Requirements

• Riders must be at least 12 years old to operate an electric scooter on public roads.

• Riders under 19 years old are required by Michigan law to wear a properly fitted and approved helmet.

🌙 Riding at Night

If riding between 30 minutes after sunset and 30 minutes before sunrise, your scooter must be equipped with:

• A white front light visible from at least 500 feet.

• A rear reflector visible from at least 600 feet in vehicle headlights.

• A rear red light may also be used in addition to the reflector.

🚶 Sidewalks

• Riding on sidewalks is generally permitted under Michigan law.

• Riders must yield the right-of-way to pedestrians and provide an audible warning before passing.

• Always check local ordinances before riding, as some municipalities may prohibit or restrict scooter use in certain areas.

⚠️ Ride Responsibly

Unsafe or reckless operation can result in:
• Traffic citations
• Civil liability
• Financial responsibility for injuries or property damage

Parents may also be held responsible for the actions of their minor children.

🚔 Enforcement Reminder

During the warmer months, the Woodhaven Police Department experiences a significant increase in electric scooter activity throughout our community. While our goal is education first, officers will continue to enforce Michigan traffic laws related to the operation of electric scooters. Violations that place riders, pedestrians, or motorists at risk may result in enforcement action.

Our goal isn’t more tickets—it’s fewer injuries.

By understanding and following Michigan law, we can all help make our roads, sidewalks, and neighborhoods safer for everyone.

The Woodhaven Police Department extends our deepest condolences to the Lincoln Park Fire Department, the Amrozi family, and all who knew and loved Sgt. Adam J. Amrozi.

Sgt. Amrozi dedicated his life to serving others as a firefighter-paramedic, answering the call with courage, compassion, and unwavering commitment. His legacy of selfless service, humility, and kindness will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of serving alongside him.

The bond between law enforcement and the fire service is built on trust, teamwork, and a shared commitment to protecting our communities. Today, we stand with our brothers and sisters in the fire service as they mourn the loss of one of their own.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Sgt. Amrozi’s family, friends, and the members of the Lincoln Park Fire Department during this incredibly difficult time.

Rest easy, Sergeant. Your watch is over. We will never forget your service and sacrifice.
