Today, we recognize National Purple Heart Day and those men and women who were wounded or lost in action in defense of our country and our freedoms. The City of Woodland Park was proudly recognized as a Purple Heart Community in 2023 and stands with our veterans and armed services members.

This afternoon, officers were out patrolling on the Avenger Open Space in our recently acquired UTV. We are fortunate to have been able to secure this piece of equipment to help us maintain the security and integrity of our trails, open spaces and other areas of the city. This UTV will increase our service capacity and allow us to reach remote areas where people need us.

August is recognized as “Back to School Month”. As our kids are preparing to head back to class, it is important to remember that our highest priority is getting everyone to school and back home safely.

When driving in a school zone, a few extra seconds can make all the difference. We will continue to be a presence both during entry and dismissal times so please slow down, exercise caution, and follow the posted speed limits in a school zone.

On August 1, 1876, President Ulysses S. Grant signed a proclamation admitting Colorado into the Union as the 38th U.S. state. Today, we celebrate the 150th anniversary of that occasion. In March 1907, the Colorado General Assembly officially designated August 1st as “Colorado Day”.

** Package thief arrested **

On July 25th, we were notified by the victim in this case of the theft of packages from his porch. At approximately 2:20 PM, surveillance cameras on the property noticed the suspect pictured below remove the packages and leave the area.

During our investigation, we learned this suspect was also wanted out of Cripple Creek for additional offenses. Through information sharing, the suspect was quickly identified. The following morning, the suspect, Travis K. Tapp was located and placed under arrest in our case. Active warrants from Cripple Creek were also served on the suspect.

We would like to thank our partners with the Cripple Creek Police Department and Teller County Sheriff's Office for their assistance.

** Hwy. 24 & Paradise/Aspen Garden intersection **

Based on the recent crashes that have happened at this intersection within the last week, we have been in contact with our partners at CDOT. Our discussions have been based on the crash data we have compiled concerning both causes and contributors to the recent crashes- one being the flashing yellow yield/left turn arrows along Hwy. 24 in both directions.

As a result of our discussions, CDOT will be placing the left turns back under "protected" status during their daytime light cycle programming- these hours are weekdays 6 AM to 7 PM and weekends 7 AM to 7 PM. The changes are expected to take place early next week.

** Attempt to Identify **

This morning at approximately 11:09, officers saw a red ATV on Highway 24 near Lafayette Ave. After attempting to stop the ATV, the rider fled from the units. The ATV turned into the eastbound lanes of Highway 24 and then turned back into the westbound lane over the median, almost causing the ATV to tip over.

The ATV was later spotted throughout Woodland Park and continued to evade both our officers and TCSO deputies. The rider was described by witnesses as a white male wearing a tan face mask, a black shirt, and khaki colored shorts.

If you have information about this ATV rider’s identify, please contact Ofc. Callison at 719-687-9262. You may remain anonymous.
