At sunrise this morning, the City launched its partnership with the California Conservation Corps! The CCC will assist the City in its long range invasive plant management efforts at the Woodland Regional Park Preserve.

The 12 person crew was led throughout the nature park by local plant experts and City staff to introduce them to the site and the tasks at hand. The crews spent their first day hand pulling stinkwort, a pressing task to complete before the invasive plant went to seed!

The City looks forward to a fruitful and long term partnership with these conservation leaders 🌱💪🏽

6AM site meetings are the way to beat the heat! This morning, the City met with plant experts to strategize about invasive plant management at the WRPP. Hand pulling, dead heading, and other techniques will be applied to help keep our native plants happy.

Let’s talk about water! 💧

Thanks to over $500,000 in funding from the Wildlife Conservation Board and California Waterfowl Association, the Park’s former borrow pit was regraded into a permanent AND seasonal wetland over the past couple of years.🚜

In late 2021, we watched the first flows of water into the regraded wetland. The installation of the grant-funded well and pump help regulate water levels throughout the seasons, providing ample habitat for a variety of resident and migratory bird species, all year long.🐦

Ever heard of Russian Knapw**d?

We have partnered with Yolo County Resource Conservation District to reduce the spread of this highly invasive w**d that has the potential of displacing native vegetation and reducing the forage potential for wildlife. It is also very detrimental to agricultural crops, especially alfalfa hay, and our County Agricultural Commissioner supports this work.

Experts from Yolo County RCD will tackle knapw**d eradication at the Park in mid-spring in an effort to stop new growth in its tracks and protect our Park’s biodiversity.

The ✨ STARGAZING ✨ event at the Park Preserve was a success! 🌙🔭

Hosted by our project partner Tuleyome, this event welcomed 19 community members who observed the moon, Venus, Jupiter (and 3 moons), as well as Saturn and its rings!

In addition to the telescopes, the astronomer connected a laptop to a camera for “socially distances stargazing”. 💻

Thank you Tuleyome for hosting this awesome event at our Park Preserve!

Have you spotted any Tricolored Blackbirds in Woodland recently? 🙋🏼‍♀️🙋🏻🙋🏽‍♂️ We have!!

Although this threatened species’ population has declined by more than 80% in the past 70 years, the Tricolored Blackbird has traditionally nested nearby the each summer after migrating into the area for the season. As the park continues ongoing restoration, we hope that they are finding the WRP hospitable! 🐦🌳☀️

Head over to Tuleyome’s profile to sign up for their Zoom talk on these remarkable birds to learn about their history, habitat, how to tell them apart from their red-winged blackbird relative, what we can do to help this rare bird thrive in Yolo County, and more!

Event details 👉🏽 Register with for the May 28 @ 7pm Zoom talk.

Next step - M U L C H !

What is the utility of mulch?
👉🏽 erosion control
👉🏽 invasive plant species control
👉🏽 moisture-locking for soils (especially useful during our hot Yolo County summers)

Can you think of any other reasons to opt for mulch?

Fun fact: this mulch has been generated from various ongoing landscaping projects that our City crews carry out - and now will be repurposed at our Park🍂🍃
