🛻 Keep Our Roads Clean—Tarp Your Load! 🛻

When hauling waste to the landfill, including the Yolo County Central Landfill, be sure to securely tarp and strap down your load. Untarped loads are a leading cause of roadside litter, creating traffic hazards, polluting stormwater, and threatening wildlife. 🌎

Plus, remember that arriving with an untarped load at Yolo County Central Landfill can result in a fee.

Let’s protect our roads, our community, and our environment—tarping your load makes a difference! 👍

Due to new requirements on used cooking oil recyclers, the City of Woodland can no longer take in used cooking oil. So if you are considering deep frying your turkey this year you should consider where you are going to dispose of that used cooking oil. You can take it to the Yolo County Landfill for free during HHW hours Thursday - Saturday from 7:30 am - 3:30 pm. Under no circumstances should anything other than natural rainwater enter our storm drain systems. Please "like" and "share" our post to help spread the word.

The City of Woodland is offering free, self-serve compost at two convenient locations: Woodland Community Services "Parks & Rec." and in the solar parking lot near City Hall on Court St and College St daily. This nutrient-rich compost is made from the food and green waste collected from your organics carts, and processed at the Yolo County Landfill.

Bring your own tools and help yourself to as much compost as you need! Free buckets will be available at each site, while supplies last, otherwise bring your own. Please be mindful of others and vehicles in the area. Piles will be replenished as needed.

Did you know…..that anything other than natural rain water in our storm drains is a violation of our Municipal Code? This includes dirt, animal waste, oil & grease, pesticides, cleaning chemicals, paints and garbage just to name a few. Woodlands storm water is not treated and flows into natural habitats and our rivers/streams. Think of our waterways as a home to many species of animals and how you would feel if these items flowed through your home. Ick!

The leaves are falling and so is the temperature, I can smell the rain. Now is a great time to start prepping your home and property for the rainy season. Clear your homes gutters of dirt and leaves. Rake up leaves and place them in your green waste bin or use them to compost. If you put piles of leaves at the curb, ensure that the pile does not prevent the flow of rain. If you have a storm drain near your property, ensure that leaves and garbage do not accumulate blocking it. Always remember that storm water is not treated and anything other then natural rainwater flowing into drains can pollute our waterways.

Storm water Pollution Prevention is everyone’s responsibility. The City of Woodland’s storm water is not treated and flows directly to our local waterways. We can all do our part in keeping our waterways free from pollutants. Ensuring trash stays in the garbage by closing lids, not overusing fertilizers and pesticides, preventing pollutants like motor oil, paints, and other cleaners from entering the storm drains are just a few things we can all do to keep our waterways and the animals that call it home healthy and clean.

What do you think of when you hear “Fats, Oil & Grease” (FOG)? Most likely its cooking oil but did you know that FOG is much more then that. It is in meats, sauces and dressings, butter, dairy products and many more foods that we dispose of. We are all guilty of putting these things down our drains and who hasn’t experienced a slow kitchen drain or a backed-up sewer. The best place to dispose for any food waste is in the garbage not your drains. After all, you wouldn’t but your gallon of milk or rump roast in a kitchen drawer?

This is what happens when things enter our sewer system that should go into the garbage. Waste like fats, oils and grease co-mingle with hair, wipes, feminine hygiene products, plastic bags and creates a monster that hinder equipment from keeping the waste moving down the line. The only thing worse then this monster is a sewer back up in your home so please put trash where it belongs, in the garbage.
